You are welcome to the open house!

On September 26 at 16.00 - 20.00 Talga AB arranges an open house in Folkets Hus in Vittangi, where we talk about the plans for Talga's graphite extraction in Nunasvaara Södra.
The goal of the meeting is to describe the effects the project will have in relation to the environment and society around Vittangi, and to listen to opinions and hold a dialogue with residents and companies affected by Talga's operations. Ramboll, who is our consultant in impact assessment, participates in the meeting.
It is important to us that the project benefits society, respects the environment and follows the highest standards of sustainability and responsibility. We want to promote a dialogue with all stakeholders. Therefore, there will be the opportunity to talk with both Talga's staff and with Ramboll's representatives individually or in small groups.
We hope that you/you have the opportunity to come. Warm welcome!

Environmental permit, what happens next?

On April 5, 2023, the planned graphite mining in Nunasvaara Södra was granted an environmental permit and a permit within the framework of Natura 2000 by the Land and Environmental Court. The mining operation, which will include an average of 100,000 tons of graphite ore annually, is carefully planned to minimize the land footprint, the amount of waste and disturbances to the environment. The design of the industrial area is optimized to limit the impact of noise. To minimize dust, open areas will be kept small and transport will be covered.
Talga strives to work in sustainable coexistence with reindeer husbandry and other land use. To reduce disturbance to grazing reindeer during the winter, mining operations in Nunasvaara Södra will end in September each year, and resume in April. Beneficiation of ore, which means less transport and less activity in general, will continue throughout the year.
Cooperation with the local community
Collaborating with the local community and understanding different values and interests is important to us. Therefore, we take the opinions of local stakeholders very seriously. At our open house you will get more information, the opportunity to ask questions and give your views.

Just a snippet
The residents of Luelea are very interested in exploring the new industrial park in guided tours.

1697010029464.png

"Celebrated bus journey showed Luleå - "I don't think many people realise how much is happening"

Porsö Centre, Dalbo, Kronandalen, Hertsöheden and Luleå Industrial Park - a pensioners' club in Luleå got to see and hear more about this and much more when the municipality showed investments and projects during a bus tour in September.

- "Everyone here in Luleå should go on a trip like this," says club member Britt-Inger Hedqvist.

1697010099116.jpeg

I september följde Luleå kommun med på en bussresa för att berätta mer om olika projekt och satsningar i Luleå.

The Luleå Industrial Park is increasingly taking shape, new residential areas are being created, new roads are being built and reinforced, various centres are being renovated, schools are being built and so are bathhouses. A lot is happening in Luleå. And it is not easy to keep track of everything - so Roland Nyman and his pensioners' club booked a bus and invited Luleå municipality to tell them more about the initiatives and projects in the municipality. In retrospect, Nyman thinks it was a rewarding bus journey:

- Very interesting, I think you can answer for all of them. We had heard about a previous bus trip that had been made with another organisation and that prompted us to contact Luleå municipality.

1697010163041.jpeg

Svartön and Luleå Industrial Park were visited by the pensioners' club.

Luleå should be cosy

The trip, which started in Northern Harbour and later went on to Porsön, Dalbo, Kronandalen, Hertsön, Svartön and Varvet, was also appreciated by club member Britt-Inger Hedqvist:

- "Fantastically good. You have not realised how big this (the investments and projects) has been. Everyone here in Luleå should go on a trip like this, she says and continues:

- I don't think many people really understand how much is happening.

What do you think about all the initiatives that are made?

- I think it's great and I feel that there is a huge spirit of progress, says Hedqvist.

On the bus you talked about making Luleå a little more green...

- Yes, I did! It should always be densified and you can never get away from that. I was born in central Luleå and have seen all the transformation and what has been done over the years. But to do it in a nice way and so that you can see some green areas is needed. It doesn't just have to be stone buildings, cars and car parks. It should be cosy.

1697010304146.jpeg

Outdoor life and culture are important

Roland Nyman is positive about the investments being made and the construction of housing:

- "I think these are great investments. You have to think about the goal of becoming 100,000 citizens, which also requires areas and housing where people can live.

- It is difficult to move here if there is no housing and what is the point of having industry if you can't live here? Everything is connected.

What else do you think is needed to recruit new Lule residents?

- I think that outdoor life is important. We have quite a few associations throughout the municipality. I think we need to protect the sports organisations and ensure that good premises for the activities are available," says Nyman.

Hedqvist mentions culture and winter activities:

- If you make Luleå attractive so that it attracts young people and keeps the culture alive, it can be good. Those who move here must like both winter and summer, hot and cold.

- Many people are sceptical about winter, but I think it's good to make winter attractive, as is being done now with the ice road and skating competitions. There must be a lot of everything.

More commitment

Frida Lindberg, head of planning at Luleå municipality, acted as a guide during the bus tour. Afterwards, she stresses the importance of showing what is happening and the hope that this will be recurring:

- "It is important for us who work with planning to reach out to more people and tell them about everything that happens in our municipality. We want more Luleå residents to get involved in the planning of Luleå, says the planning manager and continues:

- Listening to views and thoughts is invaluable in our mission and we are happy to go on more bus tours!"

First sod in Luleå
"The factory is unique in Europe"

Land preparation work is now underway for the planned battery anode factory in Luleå industrial park. In ceremonial forms, the first sod was broken on Hertsön on 11 September.

There was a happy gathering of colleagues, listeners and other guests on site when the first sod was broken for Talga AB's battery anode factory in Hertsö industrial park. The majority of journalists were present, including Sweden's Radio.
"Now the spade has been put in the ground where Talga AB plans to build a battery anode factory", Sveriges Radio began its live reporting.

Among others, Luleå's municipal councilor Carina Sammeli and labor market minister Johan Pehrson participated in the ceremony together with parts of Talga AB's management and board.
- It is a great honor to be here and I will be happy to come back when the factory is inaugurated, said Johan Pehrson.
Per-Erik Lindvall, chairman of the board for Talga AB, was also present.
- This is a unique factory in Europe, there is no other, we are the first. It will provide jobs for around 100 people.

Open House in Vittangi

On September 26, Talga AB held an open house in Folkets Hus, Vittangi, with visitors of varied ages and from different places.

Most visitors came from Vittangi, which was the main objective of the evening aimed at dialogue and the open conversation about the planned mine.
- Those who are doubtful about the mine at Nunasvaara Södra are usually because the rivers are close to the mine area and a common misconception is that we will build a dam, which will not be the case with this mine, says Liz Asplund, operations coordinator at Talga AB.

Talga AB plans for more occasions where visitors can come to talk and ask questions. These will be announced via our channel on Facebook and in the newsletters. Stay tuned and welcome!

Talga AB sponsors Kultura Kiruna

8ce2b7d9-d222-1f32-7a01-7de7ce7cf119.jpg
With a rarely seen breadth of cultural elements, Talga AB thought it was obvious to enter as one of the major sponsors of Kultura Kiruna. The cultural event is back after an appreciated event last year.
Between 17–26 November, Kiruna once again closes up for a unique meeting between outdoor life, sports and culture. This year's cultural festival includes, among other things, a somewhat incredible choreography on skis in connection with the opening of the Swedish mountain premiere. Among the participants in Kultura Kiruna 2023 are names such as photographer Jessica Segerberg, choreographer Fanny Kivimäki (whose choreography takes place in Luossabacken), sports journalist Erik Niva, artists Britta Marakatt Labba and Jens-Thoms Ivarsson, writers Marie Lundström and Lina Ekdahl, and many more. Not least, there will be a lot of wonderful music with, among others, Lisa Miskovsky and Movits!
- When we were asked to participate, we were actually not slow to say yes. It is exactly these kinds of arrangements that Kiruna needs. The ore fields cannot only be about jobs, but it must also be fun to live and live here and feel that way for those who are curious about settling in the municipality, says Liz Asplund, activity coordinator.
You can find the entire program and more information at: https://kirunavaxer.se/kultura/

Talga AB shall optimize the handling of the enrichment sand

afc202f3-a489-2231-ad48-b7b346b8a99d.jpg
Large containers of enrichment sand, i.e. residual material similar to that generated during future mining, have been placed in the field to see how the material reacts with, among other things, snow and rainwater. This is to reach the highest level of ambition in the future handling of enrichment sand and water at Nunasvaara Södra.

The installation was made on September 28-29 this year and consists of four plastic containers without lids, so-called IBC containers, which are exposed to various weather conditions. Inside is enrichment sand, the composition of which is similar to that which will be generated when the mine is in production.
- The purpose is to predict how the sand is affected when, among other things, rainwater and snow pass through it, says Iana Bacquet, newly employed geologist at Talga AB, and adds: - It is
about finding out as much as possible through exposure for a long time and everything water is taken care of. The data we obtain will also be used to optimize our water treatment.

In the bottoms of the containers is textile cloth to keep the material in place regardless of the weather, and the investigations are expected to last for at least two years. Several sensors are placed at different depths in the containers and record physical parameters for the study. The water that flows through is collected at the bottom and later tested at regular intervals.
- We are now carrying out this investigation to optimize handling. For us, it's about ensuring as little environmental impact as possible, says Iana Bacquet.

The protracted procurement process is delaying the work by almost nine months. The new contractor is expected to start work in February and March.

However, some work can be done earlier under the land framework agreement that already exists between Luleå Municipality and Nyab.

I have not read anything more nonsensical in recent years. A call for tenders (?) with the result that someone gets the contract. This is contested so that the court changes its mind. That, in turn, is also contested. So that the court changes its mind again and everything starts all over again. 😵‍💫
This reminds me of when the Swedish Lawyer Association thought there was good business in the North and called for a greater presence there.
That the project manager believes that there will be no delays comforts me in this Swedish administrative madness.

I underline that I suspect that this refers to the industrial park in general and I suspect that our contract with NYAB is not affected and it only concerns work for the municipality, so the project manager is right from my point of view.
Reminder:

"NYAB begins work for Talga at Europe’s first commercial battery anode refinery

11.09.23
NYAB begins the earthworks at Talgas’ new battery anode refinery located in Luleå Industrial Park. The facility will be powered by renewable electricity and is part of Talgas’ investment in climate-smart battery anodes, using natural graphite from the Vittangi mine in Kiruna municipality. Preparations for the construction of the refinery will start with this agreement and will begin in September.

The green industrial transition continues in northern Sweden

Northern Sweden is experiencing a significant investment boom and only in Luleå there are plans for 100 billions of kronors. Luleå Industrial Park is a hub for green transition, where cluster of heavy industrial companies such as Talga invest.

Talga AB develops green graphite battery anode products, technology and advanced materials. Talga is now establishing its first commercial facility in Luleå, where the planned annual production of battery anode material will be sufficient for approximately 200,000 new electric cars each year.

“We are very pleased that with this agreement with NYAB we are able to start our significant investment in Luleå. Facilities like this are crucial to the transition to a more sustainable future. By using natural graphite from Vittangi, green energy and proprietary process technology, we can reduce carbon dioxide emissions from the production of battery anodes by as much as 92%”, says Peder Enoksson, Project Director at Talga.

NYAB’s works include necessary earthworks. Excavation, filling, pipe laying and soil coatings for civil engineering installations and buildings within the property. Work will begin immediately. The signed contract includes an option for additional land and infrastructure-related works, which is intended to be started no later than spring 2024. The parties have agreed not to disclose the contract value.

“NYAB is founded in Luleå and has a deep understanding of, and close connection to, the regions where we operate. To now be established with another important project in Luleå Industrial Park puts us in a good position to capture future business opportunities. We want to continue to contribute to the green and industrial transition. We are proud of the trust Talga shows us”, says Magnus Granljung, Managing Director of NYAB Sverige AB."

What a shit show!
I'm not worried about that. The ann from NYAB says that they will do the connection work for us. So our work will be done up to the intersection of the local government and will not affect our schedule and other work can still be done.
But what a mess I totally agree with you!
Maybe one could also call it a shitty tragedy. It's like the court is appealing against itself.

A little update on the local page in Lulea. As you can read below every household in Lulea receives this newsletter. So nobody can claim not to know that Talga is the first. Here we go -> under construction 🚧🏗️

06. November

"Talga first out on the new part of Luleå Industrial Park

The work to establish new industry at Luleå Industrial Park has begun.
The first of the new operations is Talga, which has started the construction of Europe's first battery anode factory at the Hertsö field.
1699286958030.jpeg

Talga's plant at Hertsöfältet will be powered entirely by renewable energy, making it one of the most sustainable battery anode factories in the world.

Luleå Industrial Park is the place where industrial investments of up to SEK 70 billion will be realized. This is where the new green industrial revolution will take place, establishing new climate-smart technology that will dramatically reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Talga has started construction of Europe's first battery anode factory that will convert natural graphite from the mine in Vittangi into anode material for electric car batteries. Next in line to build on the Hertsö field is Duroc rail, which maintains railway wheels and recently received a building permit.

The construction phase of Talga's production facility is expected to create hundreds of jobs. The plant will also be powered entirely by renewable energy, making it one of the most sustainable battery anode factories in the world – and a significant part of the green transition in Norrbotten.

"Luleå has a unique opportunity to be a world leader in the green transition and contribute to a world that is not dependent on fossil fuels," says Robert Eriksson, Project Manager for Luleå Industrial Park.

"Luleå Industrial Park will be the place where several industries gather, industries that with their production contribute to making Sweden and the EU self-sufficient in important raw materials and products. The proximity to the Port of Luleå, Luleå Airport and Luleå University of Technology is a great advantage, says Eriksson.

1699287006578.png

Overview of Luleå Industrial Park with Svartön and Hertsöfältet.

There is perhaps still a certain skepticism among some who remember Stålverk 80, the 80's industrial investment that did not happen. But without that investment, Luleå would not have had the same conditions to create the industrial cluster within the green transition that is now underway, says Robert Eriksson, who today can give a thought of gratitude to the investment that lasted so long that a large area of industrial land, the Hertsö field, had time to be built.
"Without this industrial land, we wouldn't have had all these establishments, so it can be seen as a bit of a belated revenge for the work that was done here for Stålverk 80," he says.
LKAB, SSAB, Fertiberia and Uniper will also build climate-smart industries at Luleå Industrial Park. LKAB will extract rare earth elements and phosphorus, SSAB will build a new fossil-free steel mill, Fertiberia will build a fertilizer factory and Uniper a hydrogen plant. At the time of writing, permit processes and detailed planning work are in progress for all of them, and it is therefore not possible to say when the industrial projects can be fully underway.
"It's a matter of major investments, both financially and in terms of personnel. Around SEK 70 billion and up to 1,500 new jobs in the industry, plus all the ancillary effects that create even more jobs," says Robert Eriksson and continues:
"The challenges lie in the fact that a lot has to happen quickly and preferably at the same time. Permit processes, detailed development plans, and expanded infrastructure around power supply as well as roads and railways are crucial.

  • The article above is part of the magazine Vårt Luleå issue 3, 2023, which goes out to all households in Luleå. The theme of the current issue is social transformation.
  • Luleå Industrial Park consists of the existing industrial area on Svartön and the new Hertsö field. Several industries are in the process of establishing themselves and in order to coordinate the needs of the industries in the area during the construction phase, there is the Luleå Industrial Park project, which is run by Luleå Municipality.
  • The industrial area at Hertsöfältet is about 70 hectares, an area the size of 140 football pitches. The proximity to other facilities, the port and the railway means that Luleå Industrial Park is optimally located."

So we see that the project manager from the industrial park is right and we can build and that the double loop in the tendering process affects the municipality itself, but not us. So no delay here.

Unfortunately I am not a Swedish civil engineer... I hope the Swedes have developed tricks to build even in winter, because deep snow and icy temperatures are quite normal for them 😊
In my town, chaos is perfect as soon as there is even a small layer of snow. Maybe it's just normal for the Swedish construction workers and everything will go on as usual for the next few months as long as it doesn't reach -30C° or -40C° 😅
@beserk maybe you can tell us something on the subject or find out to what extent the construction work up there is also carried out over the winter, whether this is normal?

Just a reminder for me to come back here later. The page is down at the moment. But that fits in perfectly with the subject of Optus Day today ;)

Makes me a little curious as to whether the foundations can actually be laid soon before the ground is totally frozen for a long time. I hope so. It is already 0C° in Lulea. But I can only see if there's anything to it when the page is up again.

Here it is. From the new presentation:

I don't think I need to worry about the winter affecting the construction workers in the north 😅

I found it in a roundabout way.
Reminds me of the green party and its desire to close Cementa, i.e. no more concrete. Some argued at the time that it should be built with recycled materials and wood.
