just a snippet
This is a funded project in which we are participating. It is about the conservation of biodiversity:

"Climb is a collaboration between Skanska, Vattenfall, LKAB, Boliden, Cementa, SCA, Skellefteå Kraft, Specialfastigheter, Svenska Kraftnät, Talga, Swemin, SBMI and Ecogain. The aim is to establish the tool as a useful and widely accepted biodiversity assessment model.

The project was funded by Swedish Mining Innovation and Vinnova and supported by the Energy Agency and Formas.

About biodiversity
The term biodiversity stands for the millions of species that exist on our planet and how they interact with each other. Many plants and animals are now under threat and biodiversity is declining at an accelerating rate.

The biggest threats to biodiversity are changing land uses such as deforestation or urbanisation, but also climate change, pollution and invasive species that are being pushed out of their natural environment."

For more than ten years, the iron and steel industry has worked actively to integrate ecosystem services into operations and use nature-based solutions at the facilities.
Today, more than 50 percent of the world's total GDP depends on nature, and the World Economic Forum assesses the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem collapse to be one of the fastest growing global risks in the coming decade. This makes the problem essential for business and something that will need to be actively worked on in the future.
Many companies are interested and are already working to a great extent to increase biological diversity, but at the same time there are many companies that have not understood the issue and its importance.
On 22 May, on International Biodiversity Day, the book "The role of business in strengthening biological diversity" was launched. The book is meant to increase knowledge and aims to spur companies' work to protect and increase biodiversity, by illustrating how important it is is for the climate and social sustainability.
- It is positive that the entire Swedish business community is taking an active approach to the issue and we trade organizations have been involved and contributed with different perspectives. More and more people are realizing that there is a great business benefit in integrating biodiversity into companies' operations, says Sophie Carler, adviser on environmental issues at Jernkontoret.
The seminar was attended by Climate and Environment Minister Romina Pourmokhtari , who together with researchers and representatives from companies and interest organizations discussed why it is necessary for the business world to include the work of protecting and increasing biological diversity, what challenges exist and how we together take advantage of the opportunities .
The seminar was recorded and can be viewed afterwards .
imagemy3aq.png

Photo: Gustav Henschen Ingvar
In connection with the seminar, a new Swedish-developed measurement tool was also presented – CLIMB, Changing Land Use Impact on Biodiversity. The model is used to calculate the positive and negative impact on biological diversity in case of land use change and thus strengthen sustainable social development. CLIMB can, among other things, be applied to:
  • compare localizations and layouts
  • overview and evaluate different effects of investments
  • increase predictability in environmental testing
  • enable follow-up against targets
  • develop new key figures for biodiversity
- The tool is long-awaited and an inspiration to take the next step in our work among the iron and steel companies. We have the ambition to adapt the tool to the companies' industrial areas and are eagerly awaiting the manual, says Jernkontoret's Sophie Carler.
The model for making a CLIMB calculation will be available from 1 September 2023, but already during this inventory season it is possible to prepare and produce input data for the calculation for projects.

More about CLIMB:

Behind CLIMB are eight Swedish companies from four industries that have joined together in one project. These are; Svenska kraftnät, Specialfastigheter, Vattenfall, LKAB, Talga, Cementa, Skanska, Skellefteå Kraft and Boliden. The venture is financed by the strategic innovation program Swedish Mining Innovation, a joint venture of Vinnova, Formas, and the Swedish Energy Agency. CLIMB is led by Ecogain.

The project took off and was founded on the fact that the companies use a lot of land in their respective operations in different ways and have all identified biodiversity as an essential issue for both sustainability work and business. CLIMB will contribute with relevant data and analysis data that will facilitate decision-makers at all levels. Biodiversity measures will also be more effective, as the valuation tool enables companies to focus where the greatest environmental benefit can be achieved.

"Green conversion threatens the lands

On April 5, the verdict came: According to the Land and Environmental Court, the company Talga is allowed to start a graphite mine in Nunasvaara just one mile from Vittangi. The Sami villages concerned have appealed, as have nature conservation organizations and private individuals. And just a little to the south, the Gällivare forest community risks having several hundred wind turbines on its land.

The hunting master student and reindeer owner E. E. in Gällivare forest community hopes to form a strong opinion against the planned wind power plants on the village's land.

If Vattenfall is allowed to build the 373 power plants that the company has applied for, the possibilities for a traditional reindeer husbandry are largely destroyed. H. R. in Vittangi and E. E. in Gällivare skogssameby both state that the so-called green transition is now being used to get more exploitations through. But they do not give up the fight for the chips."

Now work starts on the Hertsö field

"The expansion of the Luleå Industrial Park at Hertsöfältet is now starting. In July, the ground work will start and work on the first industrial establishments can already start this autumn. "Talga and probably also Duroc intend to start up," says Robert Eriksson, project manager for Luleå Industripark.

1685524987039.png

Robert Eriksson, project manager at Luleå Industripark, visits a lonely hunting tower that will soon be a thing of the past on the Hertsö field. New industries will be built here.

The Hertsö field between Lövskärsvägen and Svartön has been mined in parts and in part of the area Luleå Energi is already preparing for a new plant, a power station to receive the planned power lines and then distribute electricity to the establishments. But soon, more machines will start earthworks on the industrial plots where the forest has now been felled, because now the current environmental verdict for the earthworks has gained legal force.

- We hope to be able to start the work in July with earthworks. Now there are already roads to start from, so we don't need to start building roads. We uncover the ground, then stumps and stones are simply shoveled away. Then we lay the foundation with soil and gravel to create an establishment area to be able to set up barracks that can function as workplaces, says Robert Eriksson, project manager for Luleå Industripark.

1685525161959.png

Emma Sailamaa is project manager for infrastructure.

In the current part of Luleå Industrial Park, Hertsöfältet, new industries are planned, such as Talga, which will manufacture battery components, anodes, where natural graphite from Vittangi will be used, and Fertiberia, which will manufacture climate-smart fertilizer. But industries also moved from Svartön, such as Lindab and Duroc, which are building new on the Hertsö field.
- Now we are entering a phase where all preparatory work with land instructions and plans turns into actual construction. 'Of course, it feels good when concrete construction begins', says Robert Eriksson.

Emma Sailamaa, project manager for infrastructure, keeps an eye on the upcoming stages:
- In the autumn we will start building a pumping station. After that, we build additional infrastructure around the industries, she says.

In addition to the constructions at Luleå Industripark, a footpath and cycle path are also being built along Hertsövägen.
- That construction will start late in the autumn, during the fourth quarter and hopefully we will be ready by the summer of 2024, says Emma Sailamaa.

How will all this construction affect the public?
- It will mean that the construction traffic will start along Hertsövägen and of course it will be noticeable to some extent, but in the same order of magnitude as when we clear snow. Most likely, Gräsörenvägen will be closed to the public so that there will only be construction traffic on it, notes Sailamaa."

So here we go. The Office of Water and Shipping still has to solve the problem for us, but at least we have the chance to lay the concrete foundation for the scaffolding this year. Don't be surprised that we disappeared from the big banner, it's only polite to our neighbours:

Luleå's future is decided – puzzle under severe time pressure

CLIMB - Swedish cooperation for
biological diversity
"We can do things on a voluntary basis"

Together, Swedish companies have developed a completely new model for calculating, valuing and compensating for biodiversity. The CLIMB collaboration aims to simplify work with sustainable land use. - We have high hopes for this important project, says Christin Jonasson, environmental engineer at Talga AB.

Global research shows that the loss of biodiversity is as big a threat to our planet as climate change. With the project CLIMB, "Changing Land Use Impact on Biodiversity", Swedish companies are making common cause and developing a tool to calculate the compensation needed for the natural values that are affected.
- On top of our estimated impact, we add another 15 percent and add even more biodiversity than we claim. We do this by increasing natural values in other places and the guidelines are to primarily work locally in the vicinity of our planned mine at Nunasvaara and in the vicinity of our planned factory in Luleå, says Christin Jonasson.

To begin with, Talga AB will use CLIMB to calculate the impact on the land areas used by the mining. It may also be relevant to look at water areas that are not part of CLIMB today, says Christin Jonasson.
- We could restore wetlands and make other efforts. We can do things on a voluntary basis.
- We hope that this will become an accepted tool by authorities that plan land use and decide on permits, but also for reporting to, among others, the EU and financiers. We also see that it could facilitate the permit processes in the future as it is based on the nature value classification that is already used today in location investigations and in the environmental assessment, says Christin Jonasson.

Kiruna grows, strengthens Kiruna municipality

e35f5b1c-9950-4825-6a87-cd27fd75ebf1.jpg
Talga AB does not believe in a fly-in-fly-out culture in Kiruna municipality. With part of the business in Australia and with good insight and experience from Australian industrial areas, the company wants to prevent the same thing from happening in the Ore Fields.

Kiruna is growing is an economic association and has around 50 members today. Talga AB chose to join for a more attractive municipality to live and work in. Today, Kiruna has between 2 - 3,000 work commuters, and if the entire Malmfälten is included, that number grows by approximately double.
- When our operation at Nunasvaara is operational, it will employ around 50 full-time employees. These people primarily need housing, and that is one of the issues Kiruna grows works with, says Liz Asplund.

Talga AB's battery anode, which uses natural graphite from Nunasvaara Södra, has a very low carbon dioxide emission compared to traditionally produced synthetic graphite anodes. These are made from coal, needle coke and other fossil energy. Carbon dioxide emissions for Talga AB's product will therefore be more than 90 percent lower.
- The green transition has already put Kiruna municipality on the map from a geopolitical perspective and the interest will only grow. Our hope is that municipal policy really sees this and creates the conditions together with business.

Read Kiruna's interview with Talga AB!

Kiruna Festival 29 June - 1 July

0131c2a3-558f-7dc9-2d49-424d89e2549e.jpg
"Festival death" was an accepted concept about ten years ago. Many city festivals were shut down, but the Kiruna festival survived. It has been organized every year since 2000 and Talga AB is present.

Between the 29th of June and the 1st of July this year, the Kiruna Festival runs with, among others, the artists Hooja and Benjamin Ingrosso on stage during the evenings. But during the day there is another important event - Kiruna Expo, where companies and organizations meet festival visitors. Talga AB is of course on site.
- I am looking forward to the Kiruna Festival. I had a lot of fun last year and now it's also being arranged for the first time in the new Kiruna centre, it's going to be exciting, says the Australian Martin Phillips, European manager for Talga.

The festival's program and more informationyou will find here. See you soon?

Swedish Business and Industry interviews Talga AB

"The graphite deposit outside Vittangi is world class". With those words, Per-Erik Lindvall, chairman of the board of Talga AB, begins the interview conducted by Svenskt Näringsliv.

There is great interest in our battery anodes made of natural graphite. Per-Erik Lindvall believes that the authorities' handling of the permit processes is going in the right direction with a more constructive approach and flexible handling. Furthermore, he believes that there are also challenges left, not least around the detailed plan and local politics.
- The municipality started the detailed planning work already in 2020, but has recently received quite a lot of media space when one of the ruling parties in Kiruna, the Social Democrats, in a membership vote with a small margin and few participants voted no to produce a detailed plan, says Per-Erik Lindvall , but adds:
- However, I am convinced that this issue will be resolved with time, not least in view of the great support for the Swedish mining industry that we know exists both locally and nationally. The importance of the mining industry for Sweden and the northern parts in particular can hardly be overestimated.

Feel free to read the entire interview on Svenskt Näringsliv web!

The local government itself is also building there. What function the building has I do not know yet. Maybe a transformer building? So that it can start with the construction properly must be first of all three-phase current (?) there I think.

"Important EU delegation visiting...

June 8, 2023
The Swedish presidency is struggling with many EU meetings in Norrbotten. Now we welcome the SMOR working group to Norrbotten and Luleå.
SMOR is the abbreviation of the name Working Group for Structural Measures and the Outermost Regions. SMOR works with the EU's cohesion policy and must ensure that it takes into account the special challenges that exist in certain parts of the Union. It can be about regions that are remote, that are islands, mountainous or that have a difficult climate. SMOR's work has a great impact on those of us who live and work furthest from the center of the EU. Therefore, it is an important visit.

img_0417.jpg
The working group was welcomed by regional councilor Glenn Berggård (V) in Luleå city hall.

- Norrbotten must continue to contribute to the European economy by supplying resources and climate-smart solutions. This requires investments not only in the green and digital transformation, but also in people and in society, said Berggård in his welcome speech."

We were mentioned once and LKAB 85 times.
a new study about:

"The conflict over land
A quantitative and qualitative analysis of news coverage of mining in Kiruna between 2020-2023.

...
In Kiruna, two national interests meet on the land: the Minerals Act and the Reindeer Husbandry Act. This study examines how the newspapers Aftonbladet, Svenska Dagbladet, Norrländska Socialdemokraten and Norrbottens-Kuriren have described the mining industry in Kiruna during the last three years. The purpose of the study is to investigate how the Sámi interests are understood in relation to the mining issue, and to what extent the Sámi perspectives are represented in the media coverage. The purpose is also to investigate which other actors are given a voice and how the consequences of the mining industry are portrayed and understood.
...
...
One article is about another mining company, Talga Resources, which has been granted a building permit for a graphite mine in Kiruna despite criticism from the village of Talma. In the article, Gunnar Selberg, a Centre Party politician, says that they are "positive about the jobs and tax revenue that will be created"84 and that "reindeer husbandry in Talma will continue to function excellently even when mining starts" and that he has "seen too many objections from them".

Norrländska Socialdemokraten and Norrbottens-Kuriren had the most quotes in their coverage, 160 and 159 in total respectively. Aftonbladet had 100 and Svenska Dagbladet 87. Norrbottens-Kuriren had one actor that really stood out in the coverage, the mining company LKAB, which was mentioned in 54 quotes. Politicians also got a lot of space, 31 times in total. Miners, citizens and communities were mentioned in the same way. The only actor not mentioned was the organisations.

*Selberg (C) on the graphite mine: "Reindeer management will manage"

We are positive about the jobs and tax revenues that are created, then we hope that Talga meets the environmental requirements, says municipal councilor Gunnar Selberg, Center Party.

"We are positive about the jobs and tax revenues that are created, then we hope that Talga meets the environmental requirements," says municipal councilor Gunnar Selberg, Center Party."

Maybe someone is interested in analysing this analysis while waiting to see if all parties are equally heard.)

But all that doesn't really matter I think because the only politicians who are against it are a small number of local politicians from the Kiruna Social Democrats. And thanks to beserk we can imagine their motives, which has nothing to do with transparency. But also on this issue PEL and MP are pretty relaxed.

A few more days... is everyone nicely excited?
Soon we will see whether Europe is capable of acting and whether the Green Deal will work. What is worth more - self-interests or the common good and climate protection?
If there is a negative ruling, that is by no means the end, on the contrary, then the government can act I think. As in the case of Kallak they could even grant the processing concession and suspend the environmental permit for the time being, if I understand it correctly. But I hope and think it won't come so far. Instead of a no I think it is more likely that there will be some further conditions or a delay so that things like flowers can be diligently searched for on site by our beloved environmental group. The latest inventory is now complete. I know that I am not making myself popular with my words.

I have often noticed that Sweden does not have enough electricity.

"Debate: Failure to allocate power threatens green transition

Several extensive industrial projects are underway in Luleå, which involve large investments and reduced emissions. All projects have in common that they need fossil-free electricity. With the announcement that the projects in Luleå will not receive any additional electricity allocation, the green conversion is at risk, even though solutions are within reach, write representatives of SSAB, Uniper and Talga.

Recently, the eyes of the world turned to northern Sweden and Luleå when Sweden hosted a summit between the USA and the EU. Ministers and commissioners watched with great interest the fantastic development taking place in the region where investments and research are being done to reposition industries. A large part of the investments take place in Luleå. New technologies will be developed here and new green industries will be established.
https://privaxy.bnu.bn.nr/proxy/gampad/jump?iu=/34405621/bn/di_di&sz=640x360&t=abTest=1&articleId=di.klara.6F6NentLBQCWuVNp8RPk3w&tags=topic%3ADebatt&categories=RYF-IXA%2CRYF-IXA-KEV%2CRYF-VHD%2CRYF-IXA-KEV-UBU&slotName=articlemodule&slotNameNo=1&tcf=0&c=6251181095&tile=0&pre=1&d_imp=1&d_imp_hdr=1
SSAB is to invest in a new steel mill, Talga aims to expand its planned production of battery anodes, Fertiberia is to produce fossil-free fertilizer and Uniper is to produce fuel that reduces emissions from ships at sea. Altogether, the multibillion-dollar amount to be invested will secure jobs and tax revenues for a long time to come. The potential is enormous - emissions will decrease, Swedish resilience will increase and this will lead to more jobs and future competitiveness.

The industrial investments in Luleå do not only have local effects. What will be produced creates value from north to south in both existing and new value chains.

All investments have one thing in common – the need for fossil-free electricity.

Last week, Svenska kraftnät and Vattenfall Eldistribution announced the allocation of power in Norrland, but Luleå and our respective companies will be without additional electricity. And without an allocation received, there is a risk that the changeover will be postponed and that projects and jobs will move abroad. We industries, together with municipalities and energy companies, have worked for a long time to take our responsibility to reduce energy demand. When we worked to create the right conditions for this, we have drawn attention to several problems and system errors that must be urgently rectified.

Today, it is possible to overbook power, that is, to block a larger amount of power than the business actually needs and uses. No one verifies that the booked power is the one used. It can block other projects execution.

Legislation and the work of the authorities allow applications for power in different regional networks in Sweden at the same time, for the same project. Where effect is obtained, investment can take place. This leads to blockages and power being unused and locked up in the system."

A bit of local news to distract. It also gives someone a better understanding of what Talga, among other companies, is worried about.

"The alarm: Sweden cannot receive electricity - despite large deficits

...
Sweden has not had the foresight that it would have needed. As I see it, the previous red-green government has a great deal of responsibility for the situation
...
He also believes that people in Finland have the right to be annoyed with Sweden.

- Yes, because according to the EU, you must not have these bottlenecks. Electricity should normally be able to flow freely. This is what the EU's common electricity system is based on. Sweden is not the only country that sins in this matter, but for too long it has been too passive in the matter."

"MP stops wind power throughout the country - refusals increase by eleven percent

...

"Sweden focuses too much on local environmental effects"

The former MP leader Maria Wetterstrand recently highlighted in a TN interview that Sweden has too much focus on local environmental effects and that this can slow down establishments that would make a difference to the climate on a larger scale. "In the worst case, the consequence is that a small local effect in one place prevents establishments that can have hugely positive effects, not least at the societal and global level," she told TN.

- What Wetterstrand says is interesting in relation to my study, it goes hand in hand, says Erik Lundin.

"Wind power is by definition a typical not in my backyard issue."
...
At the national level, the Green Party promises that wind power will be expanded, but locally it is a different view. New figures show that rejections are increasing in municipalities with MP rule. "The results raise some eyebrows," says researcher Erik Lundin to TN."

The electricity issue goes up and down as topic which could be of interest to us.
In addition, the steel sector is struggling because of too little electricity, but also because of the dispute between H2 Green Steel and SBB like LKAB. In addition, the outlook for the economy is gloomy. And I just read an article about joining the euro as a currency.
But mostly it's electricity and the unspeakable licensing process that has been established to supposedly protect the environment. That's what they're tripping over now.

Move on, nothing to see.
Although we have to be considerate global citizens, and loyal national citizens, EVERYONE is above all a local citizen and will always consider local impact and effects first. And personally I am OK with that—it is within the interests of everyone to look after their immediate environment as that has the most immediate impact on us as individuals and is the ONLY thing we can control.

From the outside, it is easy to see the possibility for critical material supply issues and danger in depending on other countries for said critical materials, but we need to respect the expectations of the locals as well.

Mankind has no control over global climate but we can do a lot to control microclimate—the climate in which our local village lives.

In that regard I respect the appeals from people like the Sami. They are just trying to maintain their current lifestyle, their current way of life.

As an investor, this is a right pain in the arse, but also, as an investor, I expect every company I invest in to be a good citizen everywhere they operate.

Talga do at least seem to be trying to do the right thing here, so I hope common sense will prevail and that status quo will prevail for the local citizens. As it always should!

The main thing is that no one is ego ignorant. It's about our planet. Someone has to move. I remind you of the Sami girl with iPhone in hand and the article elsewhere. I think Talga contributes what is possible at all. Now it's the others turn. Or should I actually pull out the map again of how much is at stake? I hear you.

I think not to have the relations in the head or heart is ignorant. Understanding or not. Talga could not respect or do more for understanding.

vs https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/business/batteries/graphite-mining-pollution-in-china/

No one on this planet has to contribute less for this achievement. And even for this they are not ready. How can you describe or call something like that?

Today the local press reports that Lulea Energi is overbooked by 1000MW of electricity. You already know the problem, SBB and Talga and others have written a fire or open letter. But today I read for the first time:

"...
The Company has signed agreements with regional grid operator Lulea Energi to deliver 40 MW of power to the Refinery to secure green energy for the facility. This will supplement the current 8MW allocation and connection for construction and early commissioning.
..."
https://www.australianresources.com.au/talga-secures-land-for-battery-anode-refinery-in-sweden/

I hope that Lulea Energi can deliver this, even if it is comparatively very little to SBB, H2 GS (who have bought the market dry) or LKAB. The policy is currently trying to reverse H2's over-reservation or overbooking.
