This time of year after suffering through another heat wave down under I start to wonder how the dear reindeer are faring up in the Arctic North. Particularly in the Torne river valley in Rovasuando, where we have our fishing and hunting lodge, under the slopes of Nunasvaara Hill.

Ahh...to be riding my snowmobile for miles along the river. And to drill a hole in the meter thick ice of the Torne river for some relaxing winter fishing in the first glimpses of Sunshine.

Fortunately the new concept in snow mobility, a tracked snow mobile powered by graphite containing lithium ion batteries, has now come a step closer to reality.

Vidde, the Swedish maker of the concept Vidde Alpha, has in collaboration with Italian super sports car maker Pininfarina, that put its imprint and Italian panache on the striking outside panels of the vehicle, produced the first pre production model of a sustainable green oversnow vehicle.

I think I will enjoy my retirement up in the Arctic closer to my roots and living a life more simplified by technological breakthroughs and not like the antis wanting to turn my back, literally on Nunasvaara and graphite that powers the mobility technology and the future, from the POV of my hunting lodge.

While we wait some more I could recommend a book by the Sami author Ann-Helen Laestadius - 'Stolen'.

It has got rave reviews among others in The New York Times Book Review.

And now the author, see picture above, is the Executive Producer or EP for a movie for Netflix, based on the story from the POV of a young Sami girl, that witnesses the killing of her pet reindeer calf by a shady character, a man who lives by selling meat from reindeer he kills and slaughters unlawfully.

The interesting bit for us Talga-ites is that the Director of the movie, Elle-Marja Eira, and Netflix have decided to shoot the movie in ....Vittangi of all places. And involve the local settler aka Kvän families and Sami as extras.

One reason for shooting it in Vittangi, given by the Director, is that you can reliably get 7 months of proper winter and the story line is confined to the winter half of the year.

However, you should be careful with what you wish for, as someone else pointed out in another posting, in January and February this year the temperatures reached record lows for this century in Vittangi.

Batteries are cold sensitive, be they of the lead acid type or even the Li Ion type, as exemplified by the company developing Vidde snowmobiles having to provide pre-warming of the batteries, and proper insulation, in order for their oversnow vehicles to function at all in temperatures down to -40 C.

Camera batteries don't fare well in these conditions either, as I have experienced on occassion, when visiting the Arctic in the depth of winter.

So the film crew shooting the movie based on the book 'Stolen' in Vittangi was put through the ringer I reckon.

In the book the main character, the young Sami girl, lives further south in Sapmi. I can't but wonder if the Director of the movie, a Sami woman, had ulterior motives in the decision to shoot it in the focal point of contention, ie the three way match up between Talma v Talga v Kväns ie Settlers living and operating in or close to Vittangi?

Or maybe I'm being conspiratorial again. Maybe the location for the shoot was chosen just because Vittangi just happens to be one of the coolest places in Sweden in winter...

I am glad however that I didn't decide to go and commune with Prancer, Dancer, Blixen and Vixen along the forest clad banks of the Torne river under Nunasvaara hill this Northern winter.

The Talma Sami, and their dearest reindeer pals, will be far far away on holidays in the mountain meadows towards Norway in May when I plan to visit my old hunting grounds.

As a matter of fact the Talma reindeer start their march northwest around Easter time this year...just in a few weeks time.

And to think that the Vidde snow
mobiles the Talma Sami will use in the near "greener" future will probably be powered by Li Ion Batteries that are 50 % graphite by weight. The Talma Sami start out their mechanised oversnow trek from under Nunasvaara ie where one of the richest Graphite mines is located. Owned and managed by Talga. And their Sami brethren in Luleå keep their reindeer in and around Hertsön, in winter time, where the Talga Anode factory will be located starting from 2025.

It is a deeply ironic situation, but as Greta would say in her indomitable way -- Down with Green colonialism!

Although this didn't seem to matter much to the Fosen Sami over the border in Norway in the recently settled case of the now Very Wealthy State Game Keepers v The Kingdom of Norway. The Game Keeper Sami have found a way to co-exist with the State Owned Giant Ogres aka Wind Mills encroaching on "their" land.

I hope that your plans work out the way you want them to and that you also get yourself such a super hot snowmobile, maybe even with Talnode Si. But you'll probably have to preheat it because of the arctic cold.
And if you do it this way and move closer to your roots, then you'll just go on a sunny holiday in your current home town when it gets a bit dreary up there.

That's 1 year since the Environmental Permit was first granted by the Swedish Land and Environment Court

Frankly I don't believe the BS fairy tale story around TLG anymore. Everything might look great on paper but opposition in relation to anything mining/industrial in the Vittangi area will gain further momentum creating further delays.

This is a classic case of all the plans looking great on paper and on a Excel spreadsheet but then they meet the reality of what really happens at ground level.

Remember all those Financial Models with the astronomic share prices............................Fantasy stuff...............but we all bought into it at the time. Look at where we are now.

Don't forget during the last webinar Mark alluded to the timing of the decision of the Supreme Court being "close by" or words to that effect. More than 2 months later............................Nothing !
