What is the latest news when it comes to the green transition in Luleå? On Friday, April 26, LKAB, SSAB, Talga and Power2Earth and others were invited to give a situation update on Luleå Industrial Park and the queue was long outside Vetenskapens hus. The event was so popular that many could not fit in the room.
- It's great that the interest in Luleå Industrial Park is so great, said Business Manager Josefine Wihlzon who was also the morning's moderator.

Breakfast with the business community is held once a month in Vetenskapens hus in Luleå and usually attracts a large audience, so also this time when the theme was Luleå Industrial Park.
Luleå municipality's new business manager, Josefine Wihlzon, welcomed the audience and said that cheers erupted in the corridors of the town hall in Luleå when SSAB announced on April 2 that they are now building a new fossil-free steel plant in Luleå. An announcement that received cheers and applause even at this breakfast event.
- We are taking the lead in the green transition, it is really big!
Wihlzon then welcomed the new companies Kranpunkten and Isopartner to Luleå and presented Blamorama's newly launched game Bumi: Next stop Earth! which is about how to transform a city into a more sustainable one.
"THE NEEDS OF THE WORLD POINT TO LULEÅ"
Luleå municipality meets the industries monthly to give Luleå residents an insight into everything that happens in the new industrial park. But to get a good answer to the question why the green transition is happening right here, the chairman of the municipal board was asked to come up on stage.
Carina Sammeli answered the question why the green transition is happening in Luleå and Norrbotten.
Carina Sammeli,
Chairman of the Municipal Executive Board:
- "Why is this development happening in Norrbotten and in Luleå?" is by far the most common question I get. Last week I spoke in the Parliament in Berlin about just that. The answer is that the needs of the world point to Luleå and northern Sweden - here we have almost everything. We are important for Europe's development and for a new industrialization. We need to ensure that we have prosperity and growth in Europe. That's why it's not a steel mill 80.
- We also have two threats that make northern Sweden attractive; the first is the climate threat. Climate change is forcing us to stop using fossil fuels in manufacturing as well as in our vehicles. Electricity can be a substitute and we have it here in northern Sweden and have had it for generations. If we are to get rid of coal, diesel and gasoline, we need the energy from renewable electricity in northern Sweden.
- The second threat is an uncertain world. China and Russia currently supply Europe with minerals. We have not mined minerals in Sweden for a long time, but now we need to start processing them ourselves. We have large parts of the world's mineral reserves here and can process steel and iron - that is why the world's focus is in Luleå and Norrbotten. When Sweden took over the presidency of the EU, the EU and the US held their TTC (Trade and Technology Council) meeting in Luleå last year, attended by, among others, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. The eyes of the world see Luleå Industrial Park.
- Luleå municipality is a small municipality in this big context, but we have land and space. We have a university and a hugely important port. We also have an energy company that can adapt and grow. What I'm worried about is that there aren't enough of us to staff schools, hospitals and have a society that works for those who live here.

"WE WORK IN RECORD TIME"
Camilla Sehlin, Luleå Business, invited representatives from Luleå municipality, Luleå Port, LKAB, SSAB, Talga, Power2Earth to a panel discussion about what is happening on Svartön right now.
Robert Eriksson, Project Manager, Luleå Industrial Park:
- It is challenging and difficult to make trade-offs when you do not have all the conditions in place. We must be one step ahead and secure land so that, for example, all infrastructure can be accommodated. We have 2-3000 people in the area today. What we see based on what only the port of Luleå is planning, there will be 7-8000 people in the area at the same time. How will they get in, how will products be brought in, how will traffic and logistics flow? We will be more people in motion and it is important to get that bit right.
Anders Dahl, CEO, Port of Luleå:
- We work at sea and on land and have three major projects going on at the same time; Malmporten is being dredged, the terminal for the Port of the Future is planned and to pay for it we have an external financing project of 15 billion. So three huge projects.
- But we as a company need to expand, we need more tugboats, treatment plants and so on and we need an organization that can meet this. We will end up with the same volume as the Port of Gothenburg and right now we are on the threshold of implementation. In addition to the organization growing, we need to start building this summer and we are working in record time. Large, complex procurements and financial matters need to be put in place. We are clearing land, demolishing buildings.
- We have entered the process that concerns local residents and citizens. It is difficult to find a dialog and do it in a good way. We need to alleviate the mess as best we can for citizens.
David Högnelid, Strategy Manager Business Area Special Products LKAB:
- LKAB is building an organization from 300 employees and a new office on Porsön. We are building a new lab for critical minerals, we have entered into a new agreement with the municipality and thus we can start industrializing.
- We have rethought our approach and are focusing on elemental sulphur as a base that is not restrictive. More sulfuric acid - provides more energy so we need to buy less energy and can sell district heating to Luleå residents.
Emma Själin, Public Affairs Manager, Talga:
- We are currently waiting for final permission to mine graphite in Vittangi so that Talga can extract natural graphite from mines in Vittangi so that we can manufacture battery anode material for battery manufacturing for electric cars in Sweden and Europe. We will be located at Hertsöfältet and we have taken the first step. But there is a lot of work to plan and complete around it.
Carl Wangel, Head of Governmental relations Sweden, SSAB:
- 52 billion is quite a lot for SSAB. Existing production is the money for the transition. It is a conversion of an existing business. Ongoing operations in parallel with the new operations. We are proud. Now the plug is out, full acceleration at SSAB. Big for all of Sweden and the value chain we operate in. Our entire Nordic production system. Visiting Oxelösund today, it feels fantastic - existing and new. Permit process and examination that we are actively working on. If we get a positive decision, the shovel is in the ground. We are already up and running!
Ulrika Hagman, Power2Earth:
- Power2Earth is formerly known as Fertiberia and Green Volverine. As Power2Earth, we have entered into a cooperation agreement with Lantmännen and Nordion Energi. All three strong partners. Lantmännen with farmers and products, Fertiberia who since the 60s has been in the business of how to produce fossil-free fertilizer and Nordion with gas, electricity and heat from renewable sources. The plan is to build a pipeline to our mineral fertilizer factory here in Luleå. We want to build a sustainable and robust Sweden. We are at an early but important stage in the process. We have started an electricity connection and environmental permits.
Safety and collaboration are important factors around Luleå Industrial Park, said Robert Eriksson, Project Manager Luleå Municipality.
GIF - NEW NETWORK FOR COLLABORATION
Moderator Camilla Sehlin wondered how companies see collaboration and cooperation? Here they agreed - collaboration is a must in order to work effectively, create clarity and drive development.
Robert Eriksson, Luleå municipality:
- Collaboration is the most important factor in making all this succeed - we have Luleå Energi, which provides us with electricity, all industries need water and that's where technical water from Lumire comes into the picture. The safety perspective is a new focus we need to have in this. We must have security around the area at all times.
Carl Wangel, SSAB:
- It's crowded at the industrial park site itself because there are many people who have to do a lot within the same time frame. We need to find synergies and benefits. We consult each other on issues relating to water and permits and in close dialog with the municipality, not least to update each other because we are in the same boat. Uniper is in this too. We need to look off site. For example, contractor housing is not built in the park, but outside. Entrepreneurial housing - maybe we can solve that together? Stealth launch: clear coordination Green Industrial Forum, GIF, that's how we try to label ourselves.
David Högnelid, LKAB:
- We have been operating in the area since 1888 when the first ore wagon came to Luleå. So we know that all peripheral services must work. We have bought into Duroc and next year there will be strip cutting at Hertsöfältet.
Emma Själin, Talga:
- There is no other option than to work together. The fact that we have all taken the initiative together is very strong. We see that it is important to work together on permit issues, that we put the puzzle together.
Ulrika Hagman, Power2Earth
- We have to work together for it to work. We have a designated area as an industrial park. Last time we stood here, we gathered to talk about accessibility to the port, how we get roads. The detailed plan itself is a part we have to deal with. Much of what we do today is not visible. But it's an important foundation for the future that will have an international ripple effect.

Luleå Business Awards partners are important for the gala. During Breakfast with the business community, four different companies shared why they are behind some of the gala's awards.
Erika Mattsson, Sparbanken Nord, shares this year's Collaboration Award:
- We have just heard from the industry panel that collaboration is an important issue for Luleå and Luleå is in the elite league when it comes to collaboration and it feels like this is our place. Sparbanken Nord collaborates with our business, with our customers and our community involvement. Part of our profit goes back to the place Luleå, to industry councils for Luleå's business community, to children's football and so on. In this way, we interact through our ordinary business as a bank and contribute to a rich leisure time, attractive places, which is part of our mission.
David Högnelid, LKAB, presents the Innovation of the Year award.
- We are behind the Innovation of the Year award because we are in Luleå, we need subcontractors and an attractive diversity of companies. Innovation is important for LKAB; development is through innovation, growth is through innovation. Forward-thinking people and crisis have made us take great leaps forward.
Lisa Sig Olesen, Nordic Community Development Manager, Meta, presents the Sustainability Award.
- We are behind this year's Sustainability Award as we work a lot with sustainability within Meta.
Meta itself has undergone a sustainability journey. Since 2020, we have maintained net zero greenhouse gas emissions in our global operations. To get there, we reduced our operational emissions by 94% compared to 2017 baseline, mainly by supporting our data centers and offices with 100% renewable energy. Our next goal is to reach net zero emissions across our value chain by 2030!
- Right now we see a challenge in society, a growing sense of hopelessness about climate change.
Veronika Johansson, Head of Communications, Galären, presents the Galären Culture and Community Building Award:
- "We want to celebrate the things that give life to the city and the life between the buildings, which is why we award the Galären Culture and Community Building Prize. Culture plays a key role in the green transition. Culture has an important role in making people want to live in Luleå. Therefore, it feels extra special to highlight culture with this year's award.
