It really took my breath the other day….

Reading about Innoviz Technologies and how they struck a 4 billion $ deal with Volkswagen AG and CARIAD as their system integrator!
And this all as #tier1!

I‘be been following automotive #lidar industrie’s progress very closely the last couple years. And I’ve noticed this shift of basically „startups“ becoming awarded tier1‘s starting literally from 0 with regards to processes, quality landscape etc…

Yet still they‘re beating well established rivals like Continental ZF Group Bosch etc….

Impressive and really signifying a paradigm shift in the whole industry. That 🦖 have to watch out as fast moving new 🚀 are taking their slots 🔥🥰🤗😍

In my role as annoying wet blanket, I previously pointed out that a recent patent of Xperi (FotoNation) invented by Xperi's now CTO P Bigioi (formerly of FotoNation) is based on CNN.

In addition, the timing of the two announcements is relevant:
Xperi/Peophesee announcement dated April 21, 2021,
Prophesee/Akida dated 14 June 2022;

so it is improbable that the Xperi/Prophesee announcement would have encompassed Akida.

PS: That's not to say that Akida is forever beyond Xperi's reach, if they can overcome the NIHS (Not Invented Here Syndrome).

Fisker Ocean, built the first pre-series units. Sold-out launch edition​

In total, the number of reservations for the Fisker Ocean - including those of the special launch edition - amounted to over 56,000 units as of August 1, 2022 . There are also more small details on PEAR , the second electric car that Fisker will build thanks to the collaboration with Foxconn. Apparently, it will be based on the SLV1 platform developed by Fisker whose specifications are not known at the moment. This car will be produced from 2024 at the Foxconn plant in Ohio (formerly Lordstown). Once fully operational, the aim is to produce 250,000 units per year of the PEAR model.

I was thinking of that beautiful Scottish golf-landcapes photos, that were posted here, when I read this (and I only hear "sensors" and "edge"):
"CalAmp’s firmware knowledge allowed FAIRWAYiQ to push its beeper functionality to the edge....Instead of waiting for the location data to travel to the cloud and back, the sensor begins to process it locally, so it knows almost immediately when a cart enters a restricted area."

BrainChip Introduces World’s First Commercial Hardware Acceleration Of Neuromorphic Computing​


As the first commercial implementation of a hardware-accelerated spiking neural network system, BrainChip Accelerator is a significant milestone in the development of neuromorphic computing, a branch of artificial intelligence that simulates neuron functions. The processing is done by six BrainChip Accelerator cores in a Xilinx Kintex Ultrascale field-programmable gate array (FPGA). Each core performs fast, user-defined image scaling, spike generation, and spiking neural network comparison to recognize objects. Scaling images up and down increases the probability of finding objects, and due to the low-power characteristics of spiking neural networks, each core consumes approximately one watt while processing up to 100 frames per second. In comparison to GPU-accelerated deep learning classification neural networks like GoogleNet and AlexNet, this is a 7x improvement of frames/second/watt.

The experience / knowledge area examples pretty much encompasses a lot of Akida connections and not saying has to do with us but Xilinx was the only one I didn't realise we had some history with.

Just had another look at the Innoviz share price graph. They were over $15 back in Dec 2020 so it has been a long haul for Share holders.
Other LiDar stocks have also lost big time.

Yes there are certainly many intersections with Akida.

Interesting that they mention ARM and RISC-V in the same breath when we have just announced partnerships with both (RISC-V via SiFive). I'm still trying to untangle some crossed synapses in my wetware which link RISC-V and ARM, which seems to have been triggered by the proximate temporal overlap of the partnerships of BrainChip with ARM and SiFive, and the fact that SiFive's newest processor had been relegated to equivalence with a 2 year old ARM processor - before SiFive announced the Akida connexion - which made the ARM/Akida link inevitable in my mind.

Looking at a recent Bosch NN patent, you can see why they would be interested in getting some more current state-of-the-art input.

In principle, however, a higher resolution of 12-16 bits is available for the artificial intelligence of the neural network.

It would probably be a few times faster and more energy-efficient if they had a 4-bit processor, with negligible loss of accuracy.

A bit of digging on Xperi found no relevant patents, but a search for their CTO Petronel Bigioi found several patents, including:

This patent, priority 2019, names Petronel Bigioi (PB) as inventor, but the owner is FotoNation, an Irish company. Now there could be two PBs, but it is possible PB now works for Xperi. There may also be a licence agreement (takeover?) between Xperi and Fotonation.

The photosensor plate combines the normal RGB pixels with infrared pixels.

Quoting PB
"The neuromorphic sensors capture information at an equivalent frame rate of 10,000 frames per second without the need for active lighting. This enables better low-light performance for driver monitoring functions, as well as unprecedented features such as saccadic eye movements or micro-expressions, critical next steps for next-generation passenger experiences."

The low-light conditions imply infrared, so it is highly probable that PB is talking about the FotoNation patents.

Xperi are working in the same area as nViso, but that would not necessarily exclude Xperi having an Akida licence.

I live outside a major metropolis, Ubers and taxis are bloody difficult to find at the best of times. Will this be better or worse with fully autonomous Uber? I expect they’ll be restricted to well-defined roads in the larger cities and don’t expect them to reach most parts of Australia. Not even outer suburbia.

Kids in Australia will be drawing salt lines around autonomous vehicles, and on roads, to trap them.

Hence, I firmly believe car manufacturers should concentrate on sensors that make driving safer and more pleasurable (as in less taxing driver assist type stuff), and not spend so much time on fully autonomous vehicles.

Will any sensor ever be able to solve the floating piece of plastic/floating balloon problem?

But I also know it will all come down to dollars and the “value of a life” figure insurance companies use.

And not sure if you know about, what's been previously said, I think by Peter?, but AKIDA2000 or "Next Gen" with LSTM, is supposed to be able to solve the floating plastic bag problem..

Job Description​

Machine Learning and especially Deep Learning algorithms play an important role for future advanced driver assistance systems. To deploy these algorithms in a fast and reliable way on hardware components, automatic software solutions for HW/SW co-design are essential.
  • Within our team you evaluate compiler frameworks for modern algorithms (e.g. Deep Neural Networks (DNNs)), and hardware platforms (e.g. dedicated accelerators, vector processors).
  • You map embedded AI algorithms, especially DNNs, onto virtual prototypes, digital embedded systems and disruptive future hardware-technologies such as in-memory and neuromorphic computing devices.
  • Furthermore, you are responsible for adapting open-source compiler frameworks (e.g., TVM, MLIR, etc.) onto target-specific ISA.
  • You work with first-class academic partners in international projects and supervise students.
  • Last but not least, you scout deployment solutions for disruptive technologies such as in-memory and neuromorphic computing regarding their practical applicability in Bosch products.

Qualifications​

  • Education: excellent Master/Diploma/PhD degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or a related field
  • Personality: highly motivated and open for innovative and disruptive ideas
  • Working Practice: independent and proactive team player with goal oriented working style and strong communication skills
  • Experience and Knowledge:
    • expert background in digital technology, computer systems and systems-on-chip (e.g., Xilinx, ARM, RISC-V) as well as programming experience (Python, C/C++) are required
    • very good understanding of Machine Learning and Deep Neural Network frameworks is desired (e.g., PyTorch, Keras, TensorFlow),
    • experience with compiler technologies
  • Enthusiasm: keen interest in future technologies and trends with passion for innovation
  • Languages: very good in English and German (written and spoken)

It does make me kind of nervous that a company with significant contracts in place is valued at half our market cap.

At the beginning it was shorts go up our price goes down, now we are seeing an increase in shorts and our price is also going up, looks like they are well and truly buggered and can’t get the price down.

SiFive, a RISC-V processor core IP (Intellectual Property), is preparing to establish a Japanese corporation. It is expected that the establishment will be completed within the next week or two at the earliest. The president of SiFive Japan was Mr. Sam Rogan, who was the president of Xilinx (acquired by AMD) and CEO of Xilinx Japan. He is currently the Vice President of Japan and South Korea at SiFive.

In Japan, "RISC-V Day Tokyo" has been held since 2017. Why did you establish a Japanese corporation now? Jack Kang, Senior Vice President of Business Development, Customer Experience and Corporate Marketing at SiFive, at a press conference held in Tokyo on July 28, 2022, “We’ve been working with RIS We’ve been involved with Japanese customers in various ways, including C-V Day Tokyo, but we believe that the establishment of a Japanese corporation is the best time,” he said. Japanese customers are somewhat conservative, and I think some of them were looking at the importance of RISC-V and market trends. But now it's exactly the watershed of RISC-V, and the Japanese market is in a state of "prepared" for the adoption of RISC-V."

Rogan emphasises, “Although we are still visiting manufacturers in various industries from automotive to communications, RISC-V is very “receive”.”

At SiFive Japan, we will start selling and supporting RISC-V. Rogan said, “In the future, we are considering development as well. Japan is required to have very high quality, so we are also considering setting up a quality control department." In Japan, DTS Insight provides SiFive's IP, development boards, and services as the sole agent, but Rogan said that the agency agreement with DTS Insight will continue after the establishment of SiFive Japan.

SiFive is a company founded by developers of RISC-V. Currently, we have more than 300 design wins and have more than 100 customers. In March 2022, we raised US$175 million in Series F rounds, resulting in corporate value exceeding US$2.5 billion.

Although RISC-V is an open source ISA (instruction set architecture), it is also a great advantage to be able to cover various applications with a single ISA. Kang said: "Arm has released 17 ISAs over the last 16 years. RISC-V is a single ISA that can accommodate applications from small to large scale," he emphasises.

Currently, the processor family provided by SiFive is a 32-bit and 64-bit CPU core "Essential" for embedded applications, high-performance 64 for networking and infrastructure and enterprise Bit CPU core "Performance" and AI core "Intelligence" for training/inference in Edge AI (artificial intelligence) and cloud. There are 11, 4 and 2 product groups each. This is joined by the "Automotive" family, which is scheduled to be announced soon. Kang explains, “Compared to the same level of Armour core, the RISC-V core is 30-40% more power efficient,” Kang explains.

The growing RISC-V market

The RISC-V market is currently growing rapidly. Mr. Rogan says, "It's a high level of attention, especially in China and Korea." Furthermore, in China and India, we are supporting the introduction of RISC-V at the national level. The movement in China became the driving force for the formation of the RISC-V ecosystem" (Kang)

Semico Research predicts that a total of 62.4 billion RISC-V cores will be shipped by 2025. Shipments of SOCs (System on Chip) with RISC-V are expected to increase from 2020 to 2027, with an annual average annual growth rate of 73.6%. Kang said, "As we have already shipped 10 billion cores in the first half of 2022, it will probably be faster than 2025 to reach 62.4 billion."

The attention to RISC-V has increased with the announcement of the acquisition of ARM by NVIDIA. The acquisition was a breakthrough, but debates about the neutrality of CPU core vendors became vigourous, and many manufacturers began to look for “arm core alternatives.” Kang commented on this as "I think the sense of crisis has become apparent in the industry regarding the neutrality of CPU cores and ISA."

I wonder if Intel was also one of the manufacturers who felt such a sense of crisis. The company announced in February 2022 that it would join RISC-V International as a Premier (Premier) member. In addition, the development platform (development code: Horse Creek), which applies the "Intel 4" process, adopts the processor core "P550" which is the performance family of SiFive. Horse Creek is also scheduled to be released in late 2022.

Rogan emphasised that "SiFive has a chance." By establishing a Japanese corporation, we will contribute more strongly to Japanese customers."

Also, the previous RISC-V International estimate was that a total of 60 billion RISC-V cores will be shipped by 2025, but recently it may be further revised upward and reach 100 billion. It was a story called Ru. Under these circumstances, SiFive's core is quite widely used. The most understandable one is Renesas, which announced in April 2021 that SiFive and the next-generation automotive processors will be jointly developed. Also, during Investor Meeting 2022, which was held in February this year, at the IFS (Intel Foundry Service), SiFive/Andes/Esperanto/Ventana Although it announced that it will support RISC-V IPs such as MicroSystems, in addition to this, SiFive announced that SoCs (codenamed Horse Creek) utilising P550 cores will be mass-produced in Intel 4. It's like announcing it.
