As Rwanda recently signed a historic deal with mining giant Rio Tinto for the exploitation of lithium, a crucial element in battery manufacturing, a crucial question emerges:
Why is the Democratic Republic of Congo, holding the largest reserves of superior quality lithium, does it not succeed in attracting global giants to develop its most strategic mining resources? 
This agreement between Rwanda and Rio Tinto marks a significant step forward, offering Rwanda the opportunity to become a major player in the global lithium market.
The DRC, despite its leading position in lithium reserves, has not attracted the same level of investment and attention from global mining giants.
Several factors could explain this disparity.
First of all, political stability and legal certainty are major concerns for international investors.
The DRC has historically faced challenges related to governance, political instability and security, factors that deter potential investors.
Additionally, environmental issues, human rights concerns and logistical challenges may also impact the decision of global companies to engage in mining in the DRC.

Additionally, regulatory and institutional reforms to strengthen governance and ensure legal certainty for foreign investors are essential to attract global mining giants.
As Rwanda takes significant steps towards exploiting its mineral resources, the DRC has the opportunity to take advantage of its abundant wealth of lithium and other strategic minerals by establishing the conditions conducive to fruitful partnerships with global players in the mining sector.
Such a development would promise mutual benefits for both the DRC and international investors, while contributing to the country's sustainable development and economic growth.
