Hi FMF,

Great find!

For a moment, I thought G06N3/49 was a new class created for BRN.

I'm convinced that the SNN Valeo are using is Akida, and the fact that it has been classified in G06N3/49 is strongly indicative of TeNNs.

The priority date is 20230202, so they would have been working with Akida 2 for some time.

Basically they are comparing successive images, much like I described in my Prophesee-based analogy of TeNNs - morphic resonance.

Some snippets of info from within the patent.

Performing the property reconstruction based on the difference between image raw data at one instance and a previous instance has the advantage that it may reduce the required processing time, since the calculations will be done only on the differential data rather than full data input.

Furthermore, the property reconstruction is done on the spikes representation of the data rather than the original data. This enables the use of spiking neural networks, which may benefit from the low power properties of the spiking neural networks and the advantageous use of neuromorphic processors.

The advantage of the described method is that event-based processing may be applied and that the raw data is processed if there is a change in the scene. This allows to lower the processing power and the temperature and power consumption of the system. If the sequence of images depicts a scene with a low rate of change, the number of processed images may drop down, and that the rate of processing new frames may drop down. Additionally, the lifetime of the components of the computing device implementing the method may be increased.

Also, it is possible to apply modern processor architectures based on neuromorphic computing, which may be optimized for event based processing and low power consumption.

The present application also relates to a computing device for image property reconstruction using a spiking neural network. The computing device comprises circuitry to execute any one of the previously described methods. Due to the event based processing of spiking neural networks, the lifetime of the components of the computing device may be increased. Also, it is possible to apply modern processor architectures based on neuromorphic computing, which may be optimized for event based processing and low power consumption.

The present application also relates to a lidar system comprising such a computing device and an image sensor. The image sensor is coupled to the computing device and the raw data of the image and/or the raw data of the preceding image comprises data provided by the image sensor.
Re the "computing device", as with all NN applications, a model database of relevant images has to be compiled, so we can assume that BRN has been involved in creating the model.

Looking at how things are playing out today, the buying side has been gradually building up. Having a look also through the course of sales, very few small orders have occurred (single & double digits), quite healthy trades so far.

I'm thinking if this continues throughout the day along with good volume, could be an interesting finish to the day :)

UK chip giant ARM developing GPU in Israel

ARM is developing a graphics processor unit at its Ra’anana development center that will compete with Nvidia and Intel, sources familiar with the matter have told “Globes.”

UK chip giant ARM is developing a graphics processor unit (GPU) in Israel that will compete with Nvidia and Intel, sources familiar with the matter have told "Globes." ARM is estimated to be employing about 100 chip and software development engineers, in its global graphics processing group at its development center in Ra'anana. At this stage, ARM is reportedly engaged in graphic processing for the video game market, and at the same time - as was the case with with Nvidia - the technology could also be used for AI processing, if and when ARM decides to fully enter the field.

The "Switzerland" of the industry
ARM operates differently from other chip companies in that it does not develop its own processors or manufacture them, but develops its own intellectual property or chip development software, which is sold to chip companies that adapt them to their needs and integrate them into their unique technology. In this way ARM has become the "Switzerland" of the chip industry - it provides software for all but does not compete with them - although this may soon change. The company’s customers include Qualcomm, whose chips are embedded in all Samsung devices, Taiwan’s MediaTek (MTK) and Apple. Nvidia also uses ARM technology, although not in the field of GPUs..
As far as is known, ARM’s technology in the field of games is found in processors for mobile phones and tablets, including those manufactured by Qualcomm. Game companies including King, Riot Games, War-Gaming and China’s Tencent collaborate with ARM to improve the performance of games on the chips manufactured using its technology.
ARM’s hardware teams in Ra'anana oversee the development of many components of these GPUs, including the flagship Immortalis GPU, while the Israeli software teams develop software interfaces for external graphics engines developers including Vulkan and OpenGL, for game developers in large companies and startups. ARM’s Israeli office also deals with software development and development tools, cybersecurity components to protect chip activity, as well as sales and service teams for Israeli chip companies that work with ARM.
ARM’s teams in Israel work with startups like Hailo, which has developed an AI chip installed mainly in security cameras. Sources say that the development center assisted Hailo, shortly after its inception, to conduct programming tests, which ultimately helped it to raise $16 million in early-stage financing. Another Israeli company that collaborates with ARM is serial entrepreneur Moshe Tanach’s NeuReality. The company, together with ARM and AMD, has developed hardware that eliminates the use of Nvidia's expensive servers, which can cost up to $500,000, and saves on electricity. NeuReality's 7 nm chip uses ARM’s Neoverse technology and is designed for complex AI processing operations at data centers and with end devices.

The rival from the University of Berkeley
ARM’s Israel development center is managed by Director, ARM GPU HW Engineering and Israel Site Manager at Dedi Yellin. He joined ARM in 2015 when the UK company acquired Israel startup Sansa Security (formerly Discretix Technologies) for $80 million. Yellin initially served at the Israeli company as director of hardware development. Sansa Security developed data security components for mobile phones.
ARM, which is owned by Softbank, was one of last year’s most successful tech IPOs on Wall Street, when it was floated at a valuation of $51 billion in September 2023. It is currently trading at a market cap of $123 billion and in 2024 the stock has risen almost 70%. Until last month the share price was up 170% in 2024, but in mid-July the share price slumped by about a third of its value due to lower-than-expected sales forecasts.
Earlier this month, ARM reported a 39% increase in second quarter revenue amounting to $939 million compared with the corresponding quarter last year. According to its guidance, revenue in the third quarter of 2024 is expected to be $780-830 million. ARM faces competition from open-source enterprise Risk-5, which was founded at the University of California, Berkeley and allows the developer community to design chip technology, which companies can use free of charge.
However, ARM has several possible growth directions, sources say. The company is believed to have plans to launch AI processors for its own servers to compete with Nvidia's and there have also been reports that together with MTK and Nvidia, ARM plans to launch AI processors for personal computers that will compete with those of Intel and AMD. In addition, ARM serves the tech giants, including Apple, Google and Amazon, in their efforts to develop AI processors and servers to avoid dependence on Nvidia and Intel.
ARM has 7,300 employees in development centers in Cambridge, England as well as at centers in the US, Taiwan and Israel.
ARM told "Globes" it does not comment on rumor and speculation.

Another interesting development with Aramco now investing in Rebellions, an AI chip design startup.

Here's a brief timeline of events I threw together:

  • In February 2022 Aramco Ventures led Rain AI's neuromorphic chip start up $25M funding round.
  • In September 2022 Aramco Ventures invested in Prophesee.
  • In March 2023 Aramco signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., which sets forth preliminary plans for a strategic collaboration that would localize an industrial 5G technology ecosystem.
  • In October 2023 Rebellions, a pioneering AI semiconductor startup, announces a strategic partnership with Samsung Electronics to co-develop their next-generation AI chip, Rebel.
  • In December 2023, the Biden administration forced Saudi Aramco-backed venture capital firm to sell its shares in Rain AI.
  • In May 2024, Qualcomm and Aramco collaborate to drive digital transformation on a global scale to develop advanced end-to-end IoT solutions.
  • In July 2024, Rebellions receives a $14.4 million investment from Aramco.

South Korea's Rebellions secures investment from Aramco

It's the first S.Korean startup to receive $14.4 bn investment from Saudi Arabia's state-owned oil group

Rebellions Inc., a South Korean artificial intelligence chip design startup, announced on Tuesday that it secured investment from Saudi Arabia's state-owned oil group Aramco, marking the first time a South Korean startup has done so.

A Rebellions source explained that it raised 20 billion won ($14.4 million) from Aramco's corporate venture capital fund, Wa'ed Ventures, and plans to enter the Middle Eastern AI semiconductor market.

In particular, as the Saudi government aims for sovereign AI by building its AI infrastructure and services, Rebellions plans to establish a local entity in Saudi Arabia.

Wa'ed Ventures, a $500 million corporate venture capital firm fully funded by Aramco, is known for investing in high-growth tech startups to support Saudi Arabia's economic diversification and new business growth.

According to Rebellions, a Series B investment of 165 billion won ($119 million) earlier this year, its cumulative investment amount has increased to 300 billion won ($217 million).

Following on from the above, there is something HUGE brewing here - South Korean chipmakers Sapeon and Rebellions have agreed to merge!!!!

This now brings together all of the following companies: Aramco + Prophesee + Samsung + Rebellions + Qauclomm + Sapeon.

South Korea has been strategically working towards becoming one of the world's top three countries in terms of AI innovation and this merrger seem to be a by-product of that. What is particularly fascinating about this is that South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol referred to neuromorphic devices in the speech he gave in April 2024.

Screenshot 2024-08-23 at 1.52.41 pm.png

Sapeons' CEO has also discussed back in November 2022 neuromorphic technologies to improve memory operation processing performance.

Extract.

I wonder where they could get their hands on the missing piece of the jigsaw puzzle, this neuromorphic technology? 😝
