SEOUL/CAMBRIDGE, MA, August 12, 2022 – Hyundai Motor Group (the Group) today announced the launch of Boston Dynamics AI Institute[1] (the Institute), with the goal of making fundamental advances in artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and intelligent machines. The Group and Boston Dynamics will make an initial investment of more than $400 million in the new Institute, which will be led by Marc Raibert, founder of Boston Dynamics.

As a research-first organization, the Institute will work on solving the most important and difficult challenges facing the creation of advanced robots. Elite talent across AI, robotics, computing, machine learning and engineering will develop technology for robots and use it to advance their capabilities and usefulness. The Institute’s culture is designed to combine the best features of university research labs with those of corporate development labs while working in four core technical areas: cognitive AI, athletic AI, organic hardware design as well as ethics and policy.

“Our mission is to create future generations of advanced robots and intelligent machines that are smarter, more agile, perceptive and safer than anything that exists today,” said Marc Raibert executive director of Boston Dynamics AI Institute. “The unique structure of the Institute — top talent focused on fundamental solutions with sustained funding and excellent technical support — will help us create robots that are easier to use, more productive, able to perform a wider variety of tasks, and that are safer working with people.”

To achieve such advances, the Institute will invest resources across the technical areas of cognitive AI, athletic AI and organic hardware design, with each discipline contributing to progress in advanced machine capabilities. In addition to developing technology with its own staff, the Institute plans to partner with universities and corporate research labs.

The Institute will be headquartered in the heart of the Kendall Square research community in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Institute plans to hire AI and robotics researchers, software and hardware engineers, and technicians at all levels.

Please visit https://www.bdaiinstitute.com/ for more information and to submit interest in working with the Institute.

In addition to the Institute, Hyundai Motor Group separately announced plans to establish a Global Software Center to lead development of its software capabilities and technologies and to enhance its capabilities to advance development of Software Defined Vehicles (SDVs). The Center will be established on the basis of 42dot, an autonomous driving software and mobility platform startup recently acquired by the Group.

Something I've found interesting with regards to the BMW posts.

BMW exploring with SynSense Speck currently as we know.

SynSense have a partnership with Prophesee as we know.

Couple of excerpts from EE-Times EU Sept 22 and Prophesee own Ann Oct 21.

Curious as to SynSense / BMW actually using Speck with IniVation cameras instead of Prophesee considering what SynSense and Prophesee agreed to....can only assume IniVation a BMW directive maybe as I (wrongly) assumed Speck was part of the Prophesee dev.

Building an artificial system based on spiking isn’t easy. Not only do we not know exactly how the neuron works, but there is no agreement on the best way to train spiking networks. Backpropagation — the algorithm that makes training deep-learning algorithms possible today — requires computation of derivatives, which is not possible for spikes.

Some working in the field, such as SynSense, approximate derivatives of spikes in order to use backpropagation. Others use a technique called spike-timing–dependent plasticity (STDP), which is closer to how biological brains function; BrainChip uses this method for oneshot learning at the edge. STDP, however, is a less mature technology. There is also the possibility of taking deep-learning convolutional neural networks (CNNs) that have been trained by backpropagation in the normal way and converting them to run in the spiking domain. BrainChip is pursuing this technique as well.

SYNSENSE SPECK SynSense and BMW are collaborating to advance the integration of neuromorphic chips into smart cockpits and explore related fields. BMW will be evaluating SynSense’s Speck system-on-chip, which combines SynSense’s neuromorphic vision processor with a 128 × 128-pixel event-based camera from iniVation.
The SoC can be used to capture real-time visual information, recognize and detect objects, and perform other vision-based detection and interaction functions.

Prophesee

The partnership will address the design, development, manufacturing and commercialization of the combined neuromorphic technology, including sensors, processing solutions, software and solutions to enable a broad range of applications

128*128 pixels!????

That's not an event-based sensor - this is an event-based sensor!

Prophesee’s Event-Based Camera Reaches High Resolution - IEEE Spectrum

Prophesee’s Event-Based Camera Reaches High Resolution Embedded vision startup Prophesee teams with Sony to shrink its pixel size to less than 5 micrometers SAMUEL K. MOORE20 FEB 2020

The resulting 1280 x 720 HD event-based imager is suitable for a much wider range of applications, including surveillance and monitoring, augmented reality, virtual reality, and drones.
Besides the photodiode, each pixel requires circuits to convert the diode’s current into a logarithmic voltage and determine if there’s been an increase or decrease in luminosity. It’s that circuitry that, in the new sensors, is put on a separate chip that sits behind the pixels and is linked to them by a dense array of copper connections. Previously, the light-sensing area made up only 25 percent of the area of the pixel, now it’s 77 percent.

When a pixel detects a change (an event), all that is output is the coordinates of the pixel, the polarity of the change, and a 1-microsecond-resolution time stamp. The imager consumes 32 milliwatts to register 100,000 events per second and ramps up to just 73 milliwatts at 300 million events per second. A system that dynamically compresses the event data allows the chip to sustain a rate of more than 1 billion events per second

The Facts:

Rob who is a dentist because he keeps his identity secret has listed his house for sale. Rob spent a great deal of time researching his local agents and chooses Browns because they have the highest number of sales and listings in the last 12 months and the principle has received industry awards and has hundreds of compliments on his web page from happy vendors and purchasers complementing him and his team for their honesty and service.

As a result Rob tells Browns that he is in a hurry to sell his house and for the best possible price but he is stressed financially and will need to sell regardless of price. Browns advise Rob that in this market sales are occurring but days on market has increased and so given his circumstances the best strategy is to go to auction with a short but intensive marketing campaign and a number of open houses both on the weekend and weekdays leading up to the auction. Rob was impressed and signs the sales and auction agreement.

Rob a week later is having a coffee at his local café and starts talking to a complete stranger about real estate and mentions he has his house going to auction in two weeks. The stranger replies “I hope you do not have that useless mob Browns doing the auction. They are the worst agents I have seen in 30 years of being involved in real estate investing.”

The stranger is called for his takeaway coffee and leaves the café. Rob has no idea who this person was or what his motivation is but starts to worry about his opinion even though it is completely anonymous and directly opposed to everything he has discovered and his personal opinion having spoken with Browns.

The following day is the first open for inspection. Worried Rob parks up the road to watch. It is a Thursday and Browns have told him that being Thursday there is unlikely to be many people inspecting but it is important to get the message out as passing motorists will see the signs and start to investigate the online sales.

Even though Rob has been told this he becomes worried when only a couple of cars arrive and only a few people enter the property and he then starts to think that the stranger may have been correct.

Rob starts to ask friends and relatives if they think he has chosen the wrong agent. None of these persons live in his area and they all have no knowledge of the agents or real estate but some still venture opinions because everyone is entitled to hold and give an opinion.

They are of limited emotional intelligence and do not consider the consequences of giving such ill-considered uninformed opinions and when one is asked by his wife why he said what he did to Rob he said why would he take any notice of me anyway.

Unfortunately Rob does to the extent that it fuels his anxiety and he starts to worry so much he is loosing sleep. He reads negative things in the press about the real estate market and about a dishonest agent in another city and ignores that the sales figures for his area continue to exceed the national average and his agents excellent reputation. He completely ignores all the evidence that Browns keep performing and telling the truth to their customers.

The next open for inspection is on Saturday and this time the agent arrives and tells Rob that he expects a significant number of people to turn up because of the telephone and email traffic they have had. When Rob is leaving he notices a number of cars parked in the street and people milling around at the gate. Rob leaves.

The agent sets up the house and then positions himself at the front door ready to declare the house open. What the agent did not see was a shadowy male figure at the side window of the house watching as he went about his duties and that immediately he went out the front door that this shadowy figure quickly enter via the back door and relieved himself on the loungeroom coffee table and defecate on the carpet in front of the fireplace before quickly exiting out the back door and leaving by the side gate.

This shadowy figure then waited until all of the interested purchasers had entered to inspect the property whereupon he places notices under the wipers of the parked vehicles maligning the honesty and competency of Browns and recommending another property that is open for inspection with another agent two streets away claiming it represents much better value for money.

The question for you to answer is who is most likely to be the shadowy figure:

1. Is it Rob the home owner with the most at stake?

2. Is it a rival real estate agent trying to break into the area and attempting to destroy Browns reputation?

3. Is it the anonymous stranger who for his own personal reasons wants to ruin Rob’s chances of a sale to pick up a bargain having discovered that Rob has to sell regardless of price?

4. Is it a 'good' Samaritan trying to help Rob by exercising a right to free vandalism and speech?
Great to have you back FF

33 minute podcast with 10 minutes of gold. The first 9m30 nothing we don’t know. 9:30 - 20 minute mark amazing. Last 13 minutes was intriguing, amazing actually that year 2030 could look like that but for starving shareholders is a bit distant.

I’ve listened to the 9:30-20min section 3 times now and I highly recommend doing the same. They can’t talk that easily and confidently about where it’s going without knowing it. High volume applications in consumer and industrial, and targeting on sensor applications.

My uneducated summary is:

AKD1000 has its uses, thankfully Renesas and megachips are humming along with this but mostly while customers developed prototypes, they were aware that a better offering was not that far away.

We have all known what BRN are have been targeting for a long time, consumer/industrial/automotive and more. As diogonese mentioned it looks like the 1500 ip offering is similar to 1000 with some improvements. 1500 is smaller, better and is what the customers want and need to get it done. I hope a successful tapeout and sign off proves 1500 in all formats and begin the domino effect. High volume real market applications in hopefully a short timeframe as lots of prototyping was done with 1000. So give the customers a successful 1500 and let’s roll.

Nandan speaks brilliantly. Very happy with him. At risk of being unpopular I am glad Peter is no longer CEO. Clearly a freak, but his engineering is his skill not business. And I think you can hear that when he speaks. A Silicon Valley veteran like Sean is what we need. And I would assume he is heavily behind the GF 22nm strategy.

By still saying “automotive” and “doorbells”and the same things we’ve been hearing I can’t believe that we won’t see it implemented.

Q2 for 1500 tapeout. There’ll be some more tough days for holders but that 10 minute spiel in the podcast has me thinking 1500 is “it”, can do everything that customers designed with 1000 on lower power and a smaller footprint. Heres hoping for a big turnaround q3 and q4. And hopefully reveal some of these bloody NDA’s!

Only my opinion. I could be wrong
Thanks for the summary.

How long after tapeout before the 1500 is fully tested or the IP fully integrated built into products then fully tested, then marketed and sold ....I can’t see 1500 real end products until 2024 by the sounds.

I hope not all EAP’s or customers want to wait for the 1500 now as that would be quite disappointing. Surely this would not be the case if we are being asked to watch the financials.

The difference is, Browns had the highest number of sales over the last 12 months.

We have zero. 🤪 And that is an unfortunate fact.

I believe we have exceptional talent at the helm. Super intelligent people that I hope are guiding our company down the right path. We also have an amazing product but we need sales, as Tony Dawe mentioned in his email to another poster on here.

Wilzy will post a cockroach pic or a dumpster pic and others will throw shade and that's fine. I'm not here to stir the pot. I have just raised my concerns regarding this and the market and shorters have controlled our price for this reason. Sales will shut them right up.

@Fact Finder what are your thoughts on the lack of 2022 sales? Sean blamed the economy and extenuating circumstances ie Ukraine and I understand that would have put a damper on things but in your opinion, is that good enough to justify zero sales for nearly 15 months now? I would love to hear your opinion on this.

Good to have you back.

Podcast was great imo. Wasn't what I was expecting but it was good to see a fairly clear roadmap of future products.

My view for what its worth is that the World has not caught up with AI at the Edge.
2023 could be the year the World wakes up??
I think it was said the initial market will be consumables and domestic which is expected to grow quickly.
AI does not exist without chips.
In any case i never expected sales until late this year.

I am mainly concerned because management alluded to 2022 having more sales (pvdm explosive sales comment, Sean mentioning growth outstripping costs). That didn't happen. Is 2023 the year? Hoping this is addressed in the near future.

I'm sorry but l have decided to express my opinion about you and others and your claim that everyone has a right to their opinion think its a hissy fit.

So if it was as you say not malicious what is your excuse?

Ignorance of the FACTS and what Brainchip has achieved and a willingness to say anything that pops into your head because well what does it matter if you express opinions of no substance?

Go and scold someone who cares two hoots about your right to free speech.

I am invested in this company for one reason which is to make a profit. Your opinions have no value unless supported by FACTS.

As such I will not tolerate the argument from you and others that 'I have no idea what this is all about, I have done little to no research, I did not understand what I was reading anyway' but I am going to say this is fluff because it is my constitutional right to speak my mind no matter how it affects your investment because this is my opinion.

I have set out why this Podcast is light years away from being fluff. I invited you to urinate on my argument. Saying I have had a hissy fit and claiming you have a right to an opinion is not a response to the stated FACTS.

Either put your contrary FACTS or skulk back under your rock.

My opinion only FF

AKIDA BALLISTA
Perhaps you should re-read my post all over again and stop making totally Unfounded / Non factual ascertions of what my intentions were at the time just because they don't align with your own rather biased views.

There was no maliciousness intented by me in any shape or form in what I had expressed as an opinion about this podcast.

To put your " Hissy Fit " comments about my post being malicious in terms that you should well understand as a solicitor imo boarders on being both Frivolous and Vexacious.
