"Talga receives 82 million kronor (~AUD13.3M or €7.4M) from Industriklivet to scale up sustainable graphite technology

Talga has been granted SEK 82 million in funding from the Swedish Energy Agency's Industriklivet program. The support will be used to scale up the company's low-emission technology for producing anode material from graphite – a key component in lithium-ion batteries.

The project focuses on optimizing processes and developing sample materials for both natural and recycled graphite, with the goal of creating a circular and sustainable supply chain for the battery industry. It also includes activities to strengthen anode supply chains, assess the environmental impact of battery graphite recycling, and prepare for commercial scale-up.

Talga announced this in a press release.

– We are very pleased with today's decision. Sweden is taking up the fight over where the industry of the future should be located. This sends a clear signal to the market that Sweden and Europe will have an important role to play,
says Martin Phillips, CEO of Talga.

The Swedish Energy Agency emphasizes that the project can contribute to the climate transition by developing circular supply chains and strengthening domestic expertise in the battery value chain. Talga's planned graphite anode plant in Luleå is estimated to be able to reduce climate impact by over 90% compared to today's dominant anode material.

– The project, which includes both natural and recycled graphite, can contribute to the climate transition by providing a circular supply chain, contributing new knowledge within the battery value chain and building domestic expertise in the area, says the CEO.

Talga is currently developing both graphite extraction and anode manufacturing in northern Sweden and has been granted strategic project status under the EU's Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) and Net-Zero Industry Act (NZIA). At the same time, the project strengthens Europe's independence from China, which currently dominates the graphite market and has imposed export restrictions on both raw materials and manufacturing equipment.

Talga's proprietary and patented technology is said to be able to meet or exceed today's performance requirements for lithium-ion batteries, thereby securing a critical part of the value chain within Europe. The project is also supported by the European Investment Bank."

I wonder if there are any conditions to be met, stipulations, whoops to jump through or other associated bullshit before this cash injection will hit the coffers and actually, fair dinkum, stave off the immediate need to raise some capital???

Oh, of course, the money is already in Talga's pocket and can be spent as they see fit, for example, to save us from the next CR ;)

Better than nothing, and it shows confidence and support from Sweden, although I hope that's not all the powder they're willing to provide.
So one could see it as a consolation prize, for what Talga burned in the Swedish bureaucracy, our money.

I mentioned in the chat that I had kept the picture of the factory in the front page of the bar up to date. But I obviously neglected to do so and have now corrected this.
And on the way, I found an interesting page with all the images from the past up to the present day after the efficiency offensive.

Take a look here:

Nothing new, but:
"...
‘As far as mining is concerned, we are currently waiting for the detailed plan, land allocation and building permit. The detailed plan has been submitted to the district administration and is expected to be presented to the government for approval in November. Once these are in place, we want to finalise the financing etc. in the first quarter of 2026 so that we can start construction of the mine,’ the spokesperson told Process Nordic.

Just got an email from them. Something has happened. I don't know if this the next required step to present it publicly, or maybe this is an after the fact requirement? But it's an open house to talk about the detailed plan, power lines etc.

Hi BlackBeak,

yes, that's seems to be right! How time flies. It's 'already' 3 November. I now suspect that this diary entry is about the posting of the detailed plan too.

Others of us have more information it seems.) Let's be patient.

Does this mean it has now been registered with the Government for final approval? And Talga are holding an open house on the 18th expecting it to have be approved by then?

At least the electricity issue has finally been resolved:

"Clearance for new power lines: "Brilliant news for the entire business community"

The announcement from Svenska kraftnät is sparking reactions from the industry.
1762959018339.png

Svenska kraftnät's board has made the final decision on a new pipeline that opens to Luleå Industrial Park and SSAB's electrical steel mill.

Luleå Industrial Park includes several companies, including Talga, which will manufacture anodes for batteries.

– This is great news for the entire business community and for the future of Luleå as a whole. It shows that collaboration, information sharing and joint problem solving can result in smarter solutions and results that work for all parties involved, says Tom Kearney, responsible for energy issues at Talga, to Metal Supply.

And at the hearing, the Sami refused that Talga participates. For years, they have been calling for inclusion in the communication process, and when it becomes important, they insist to Bergsstaten that Talga should not participate.
And in the same breath, they complain that Talga is avoiding communication.

Perhaps this is the reason for the rapid approval of the processing concessions for the expansions. Two of the five projects benefiting from the acceleration are Talga projects.

"Support in permit processes for projects within net zero and critical raw materials

Companies and industries that manufacture technology for the green transition (net zero) or utilize critical raw materials contribute to the energy and climate transition. The County Administrative Board can provide special support to such projects by guiding through the permit processes required for the operations.

Support for projects that produce net-zero technologies

If you are running a project that produces net-zero technologies, you can receive special support from the County Administrative Board in permit processes. The permit processes that you can receive support in include environmental permits, building permits and chemical permits.
Projects that produce net-zero technologies can also be recognized as strategic net-zero projects. In this case, the project also receives other benefits, such as specific time limits for permit processes with permitting authorities and municipalities. More information about how projects are recognized as strategic can be found at the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth or the Geological Survey of Sweden (SGU).

Support for projects that take care of critical raw materials

If you are running a project to handle raw materials classified as critical by the EU, you can also get support from the County Administrative Board. To receive benefits, such as time limits for the permit processes, the project needs to be designated as strategic. The application is made to the European Commission.

Get guidance and support from the County Administrative Board

The County Administrative Board can provide support to project owners in the permit process by:
  • guide you to the right authority,
  • be a sounding board in contact with authorities.
We can also, at your request as the project owner:
  • express our opinion on the scope and level of detail of the environmental impact assessment,
  • check whether the application is complete,
  • develop timetables for the permit process,
  • announce the overall decision.

EU's 19 net-zero technicians

A net-zero industry aims to reduce or eliminate greenhouse gas emissions, so that the impact on the climate is not negative. The EU has identified 19 net-zero technologies as particularly important, such as solar cells, wind power, energy storage and batteries. These technologies are described in the EU regulation The Net-Zero Industry Act (NZIA).

The EU's 34 critical raw materials

Critical raw materials are metals and minerals that are important for manufacturing, energy, defense and technology – for example, lithium, cobalt and rare earth metals. They are used in, among other things, batteries, electronics and electric cars. The EU has identified 34 such raw materials as particularly important – but where supply is uncertain or dependent on imports from countries outside the EU. These are described in the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA).
