That’s a good article. Shame Talga didn’t get more of a mention but a good perspective on the market.

Why graphite could be the first battery metal to bounce back

“For the time being, we don’t see another material that will replace graphite.”

However, most of graphite’s demand still comes from the steel sector – at least for now.

“The baton for graphite growth will really pass to the battery sector where anode material will drive a second rapid growth phase for this industry,” Montgomery said.

I always wonder why graphite for batteries and steel are mentioned together. That's like lumping baseball and golf into the same category of sports. In both cases you hit balls with sticks, buts that's about where the similarities end...

It's like lumping professional league baseballs into the same product category as oranges. Superficially the same thing but completely not.

Europe's favourite thing to do: talking about stuff.

Sorry, I'm cynical. But as endless talk is the game Europe forces us to play, it's good to see Talga is at least playing it well.

LKAB's alarm – the municipality's plan threatens the future of the Kiruna mine
Updated today 15:58Published today 14:26
LKAB sounds an alarm that an addition to Kiruna Municipality's overall plan is a threat to the Per Geijer deposit and the future of the Kiruna mine. The land use in the plan has changed to outdoor life and reindeer herding.

Hardly has the dust settled after the battle for the detailed plan for Talga's graphite mine outside Vittangi, the next plane battle flares up for Kiruna municipality.

This time, LKAB has serious views on what is called ”Thematic addition to the overview plan ”. The supplement is intended to take a holistic approach to reindeer husbandry in physical planning.

The consultation document states: ”The municipality's position is that further land claims for the mining industry should be limited as far as possible ”.

To be used for reindeer and outdoor activities
The mentioned Per Geijer deposit promises mining in Kiruna beyond 2060 and will require uninterrupted land to be used. But on a map in the ground, the area has been given a changed area of use – for outdoor activities, reindeer herding, occasional holiday homes, small tourist facilities and forestry.

Stefan Hämäläinen, LKAB's director of social transformation, has responded to the municipality that there must be some serious error in the preparation of the plan in the light of the serious consequences for LKAB and thus for Kiruna municipality.

According to the letter, the consequence could be that LKAB's operations in Kiruna need to close when the existing main level is broken out in the 2030s.

The plan cuts the Sami village
Municipal Council Mats Taaveniku (S) points out that the letter is out for consultation and that it is unclear what the wording will look like when all comments are received.

But he also cannot make any advance promise on a detailed plan for the mining industry in the Per Geijer area.

– It depends on how they manage to take into account what is at the ground level, he says.

Gabna sameby has warned that a mining establishment in the area will divide the Sami village in the middle and make traditional reindeer husbandry impossible to operate.
