Edge Computing in Space
By CDOTrends editors on November 27, 2023
Indian company KaleidEO has successfully conducted machine learning data analysis in space using the space edge computer of Sydney-based edge computer manufacturer Spiral Blue, enabling them to become the first Indian company to demonstrate edge computing.
Combining Spiral Blue’s expertise and SE-1 computer in orbit, KaleidEO’s road mapping machine learning algorithm resulted in a 99.7% data size reduction from 1,004 to 3.063 mb, using AI hardware developed by Spiral Blue.
Co-founder and chief technology officer of Spiral Blue James Buttenshaw said: “For the first SE-1 in orbit to enable two nations to make history within weeks of each other is a monumental achievement. We are excited to see what our AI hardware program can bring next.”
The collaboration is part of Spiral Blue's Your Code in Space (YCIS) initiative. It is available to developers, researchers, and innovators to run their custom code on Spiral Blue's SE-1 space edge computer, facilitating real-time AI processing on satellite imagery.
KaleidEO’s chief operating officer, Arpan Kumar Sahoo, said that this technological advancement propels India onto the global stage and empowers governments and industries to make informed decisions by increasing the value of information generated per bit.
In April 2023, Spiral Blue announced the commissioning of their Space Edge One computer SE-1.
KaleidEO is pushing the edge into space, creating a new edge frontier.

The company claims SE-1 is the most powerful computer ever built for use in space outside of a space station, giving it the capacity to process massive amounts of data in real time.
SE-1 is unique in that it enables customers to run their existing code in space without needing a compiler, resulting in faster time to orbit than ever before.
This is the fourth Spiral Blue Space Edge Computer and the first Space Edge One launched thus far. Spiral Blue has previously launched 3 Space Edge Zero prototypes in space.
Spiral Blue was founded by Taofiq Huq, who was previously an aerospace student at the University of NSW. He was midway through a Ph.D. when he put that on hold to start his company in 2017.
The company allows its customers to test their software and process data in space.
Customers write software on Earth for use in space, using an onboard computing system where Earth observation satellites process captured images.
It is an innovation that improves affordability by up to 20 times and cuts lead times and accessibility.
