The lack of an announcement insinuating talks with Kobold as media speculation or clarifying that they didn’t lead anywhere and happened a year ago seems like a very good sign that genuine talks are ongoing.

DR Congo: Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates Join the Race for Manono's Lithium

KoBold Metals seeks to acquire part of the Manono lithium project in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

According to multiple sources, in January 2025, KoBold sent a proposal to President Félix Tshisekedi's chief of staff.

The company, which uses artificial intelligence for mining exploration, is financed by Bezos and Gates.

Since 2023, AVZ has been challenging the DRC’s decision to revoke its rights to Manono and divide the permit.

The government awarded part of the deposit to China's zijin Mining.

Recently, the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) ordered Cominière to pay 39.1 million in penalties for failing to comply with injunctions but did not resolve ownership disputes.

KoBold has proposed compromised: AVZ would receive compensation for dropping its claims, zijin would retain control of the northern section of Manono, and KoBold would develop the southern portion.

The U.S. company also suggested that minority shares be held directly by the Congolese state rather than Cominière.

None of the involved parties AV-, zijin Mining, or Cominière has forever commented on KoBold’s offer.

Meanwhile, Suzhou CATH Energy Technologies, AV's Chinese partner, has provided a 20 million credit facility to support AVZ in its legal fight in January 2025.

On March 14, AVZ confirmed efforts to secure U.S. support for developing Manono but declined to disclose details about discussions or potential partners.

KoBold's move reflects geopolitical larger stakes.

Reports suggest that Washington and Kinshasa are discussing a minerals-for-military-support deal.

The U.S. aims to secure access to critical minerals like lithium while assisting the DRC in fighting rebel forces in Kivu.

KoBold is no stranger to Africa’s mining sector.

The company uses artificial intelligence to search for metals that are critical to the energy transition.

In 2022, it gained attention by investing in a zambian copper deposit. CEO Kurt House has called the DRC “the best place in the world” for sourcing materials essential to energy transition technologies.

After midnight again so not last post of yesterday, first post of today. I’m all for KoBold buying us out but at the moment all they’re doing in the media is credit grabbing, talking us down and making out they are doing us a favour 👇

It’s worth remembering that AVZ is the only company who completed a DFS, seven Environmental (ESIA) Reports and all other requirements to legally obtain the ML. NOT ZIJIN and NOT KOBOLD

I understand KoBold don’t want to offend Tshisekedi, but we tried that too and the fat arsehole still screwed us over. This time he’s desperate to get US support and get a deal done and KoBold are desperate for Manono’s lithium, that’s why they tried to get into our core library without permission last year.

There’s not a real man amongst them, AVZ shareholder’s have been putting up with the likes of these types of people trying to screw us over for three years and now we’re close to major rulings in the ICC and ICSID arbitration cases these clowns all want to pretend we aren’t even involved in the negotiations.

Just to let you know what these blokes are really like, they are even putting in the articles that AVZ had their offices raided by the AFP (drawing suspicion on AVZ) but they’re not adding in that nothing resulted from the raids.

If Nigel’s got a deal done well and good, all we’re doing is holding the others accountable in our own way and all we want is for them to cut the BS, sign the deal, give us the money and F¥€K OFF

Mate you’ve never checked in here to wish AVZ holder’s well. Your post to me fell flat today and your “lol” at the end shows your level of maturity is well below what I’d expect from someone who considers himself a TSE founding member.

I hold more BRN shares than a lot of the commentators there and I follow the financials. You lot don’t seem to realise your playing on the stock market, not your Game Boy. Try posting with integrity
Hi Dave

Not true. Here you go: https://thestockexchange.com.au/threads/avz-discussion-2022.78/post-379008

I am pretty sure I've posted similar stuff on HC.

Like I said, I've always been supportive of AVZ and the shareholder base. This is the first time I've posted shit on these threads and it's after months of watching you do it to BRN.

Try posting with integrity.

Cheers

Thanks @cruiser51 and @oxxa23

Thats well worth watching. The US is so desperate to get into the DRC and get their critical minerals that they can hardly get a word out without their desperation spilling into the meeting.

Now, without mentioning AVZ, they are finally coming out with what we have been saying for years 👇

What’s interesting is that at 6min 25sec into the video they say that Trump recently paused the enforcement of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act

So the question is what is "appropriate compensation" to AVZ, if there is someone with enough clout, to get all parties to align, with the right guarantees and AVZ waive all rights, disputes and transfer all ownership claims?

Last I heard, the size of the resource was 842Mt (with a lot of room for expansion), with a current price of around $900/t and a historical high of ~$5000/t (we are at the bottom of the lithium cycle but it wont stay there long, especially when self driving cars take off. For me, thats the real demand tipping point for petrol to electric shift, with ESS backup for unreliable power generation from renewables for countries like Aus - where somehow paying more for power locally but sending coal overseas for cheap power for them makes sense).
The infrastructure and security of the asset is also not in place, nor is the funding (given it relies on the ML for investment but we are/were literally past all hurdles to obtaining one). So potential buyers willing to take on that risk are limited (or can muscle in, in other ways like Zijin have - their time will come in court).

So factoring all that in, depending on how a deal can be structured, is it royalties and free carry 1-5%, could it be a $ sale price proportional to size of the asset and expected profits or a proportional value conversion of stock into the new owner for shareholders?
They have already mentioned Zinjin would get the north, kobold the south and AVZ would have to relinquish legal disputes, i.e AVZ would need to be adequately compensated for both north and south as part of resolution.

I am intrigued by the possibilities but not getting my hopes up on a "mega payday", but maybe I might be something back other than invested capital and a lesson (which was my previous target in all this mess).

Hi Dave

Re: ...that’s why they tried to get into our core library without permission last year.

This issue has been on our radar since late 2024, and we are still no closer to the full story. AVZ has previously said that nobody has accessed the core library without permission, which we should believe.

However, I find this turn of phrase interesting because it also infers that someone has accessed it with permission.

If someone has accessed the core library with permission, was it KoBold or another potential suitor? Alternatively, was it Locke or CATH in order to see first-hand the cores that help to underscore AVZ's behemoth resource.

I just don't know, but would love to understand more about it, and in the process put one more piece of the jig-saw puzzle in place.

Cheers

I remember seeing the photos of them on Twitter and I think Kibeya was with them. I heard they tried to get in to the core library but were turned away. By security or whoever I can’t remember, perhaps someone else can confirm.

@Mute22 posted this on Monday👇

I agree

The corollary to the statement "nobody has accessed the core library without permission" is that somebody "has accessed the core library with permission"

The statement in the announcement wasn't categorically a straight forward "nobody has accessed the core library"

So much going on recently

Can't believe the amount of coverage we are finally getting going from almost zero to front page news everywhere in less than a couple of months

Really hope this translates to a great outcome for all shareholders and a near term exit from the three year shit show

Did I mention I love using the word "corollary"......
