A few exciting looking cars and an interesting perspective largely addressed by a range of 1,150 kilometres meaning that charging can occur overnight - the comments about scarcity of raw materials to continuously make batteries is real but the research creating batteries from other materials is also real:

Bravo

If ARM was an arm, BRN would be its biceps💪!
Isn’t this the voice and technology behind hey Mercedes’?

Sonantic’s technology creates artificial voices that focus on the nuances of human speech to make them more realistic i.e pace, pitch, emotional range, etc.

Mercedes previewed two voice technologies in its VISION EQXX. One voice technology was from Sonantic to make its Hey Mercedes voice assistant emotional and expressive. The second voice-related technology was Akida from BrainChip "that is five to 10 times more efficient than conventional voice control".

Author, Motor trend.

While the Vision EQXX is a one-off, the technologies made within it are all going to be carried over into the next fully-electric vehicles from Mercedes-Benz. While aluminum disc brakes, high-silicon anode batteries, and carbon-fiber-sugar composites are probably a while off for full production, the use of single-piece aluminum structures, improved heat pumps, and more efficient EV drivetrains aren't and those along will lead to some impressive range figures in upcoming EVs from Mercedes.

The brake package system system is so important for level 3 and beyond, it sure does appear brembo are in the box seat.

I mean one thing to have imo valeo/akida sensors, but you need to stop when little johnny chases his ball in front of the EQXX.

More dots re aluminum disc brakes.

I see Merc still putting the EQXX out there & Akida.

From couple days ago on Mercedes World.

Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX Specs & Pictures Mercedes-Benz | Mercedes-AMG 15/04/2022

Bit about Akida below & know it's a bit of a rehash. Probs mentioned dozens of times before & I never noticed, but what I liked is that they outline it was applied to "Hey Mercedes" as we know, but also that the Merc engineers developed "systems". Nice to know what the others were if the "example" in the EQXX is only "Hey Mercedes".

Neuromorphic computing – a car that thinks like you
Another key efficiency feature of the Vision EQXX that takes its cue from nature is the way it thinks. It uses an innovative form of information processing called neuromorphic computing. The hardware runs spiking neural networks. Information is coded in discrete spikes and energy is only consumed when a spike occurs, which reduces energy consumption by orders of magnitude. Working with California-based artificial intelligence experts BrainChip, Mercedes-Benz engineers developed systems based on BrainChip’s Akida hardware and software. The example in the Vision EQXX is the “Hey Mercedes” key-word detection. Structured along neuromorphic principles, it is five to ten times more efficient than conventional voice control.

Although neuromorphic computing is still in its infancy, systems like these will be available on the market in just a few years. When applied on scale throughout a vehicle, they have the potential to radically reduce the energy needed to run the latest AI technologies.

Hi Perhaps,

Any chance of posting a copy of the article here as I can't access the article.
What does it mean by 80 Akidas built in?

Thanks in advance.
Best I could do off my phone with translate.

Thanks @Perhaps Nice find.

Mercedes Vision EQXX as a technology carrier with brain chip and Nvidia

Inside the Vision EQXX there is a new infotainment system with AI technology from Brainchip and Nvidia.

The role of the technology leader is also evident in the interior. All carpets are made from 100 percent bamboo fibers. Pulverized cactus fibers in combination with a bio-based polyurethane matrix form the vegan leather alternative Deserttex. The artificial leather Mylo, which is also used, is made from mushrooms, more precisely from mycelium. The material mix is completed by the well-known synthetic leather Dinamica, which in the concept vehicle consists of 38 percent recycled PET bottles.

The infotainment system, which runs on an 8K screen with mini-LED technology and a screen diagonal of 47.5 inches, is also completely new. Passengers can talk to the avatar, who acts as a tour guide. Inspired by the other concept car Mercedes Vision AVTRThe Vision EQXX also uses artificial intelligence to control air conditioning etc. Information should only be sent when the received signals reach certain threshold values. The Hey Mercedes voice control should consume significantly less power than previous MBUX systems. To this end, the Baden-Württemberg company is working together with the Californian company Brainchip and Nvidia. Brainchip provides the Akida hardware and software, which is 1.2 million neurons per SoC, distributed across an 80 NPU chipset that is being built in 28 nm at contract manufacturer TSMC. Nvidia, in turn, delivers the Geforce RTX 3080 with the Orin SoC based on the Ampere architecture& Co. continues to be the driving force behind future MBUX generations and is developing the MBUX operating system and autonomous driving functions together with Mercedes.

From 2025 there will only be new Mercedes models as electric cars

Although Mercedes recently announced on July 22, 2021 that it would only bring fully electric platforms for cars and vans onto the market from 2025, Mercedes intends to continue building and selling the cars with combustion engines that have been on the market by then as long as they do there is a demand. The group is preparing for the fact that there will be regional differences.
From 2024, all compact models of the A/CLA/GLA and B/GLB series that are newly launched on the market will be based on the Mercedes Modular Architecture platform. The MMA platform can be used for both e-cars and automobiles with a transversely mounted 4-cylinder engine. Mercedes will develop the combustion engines for the MMA vehicles with the Chinese car manufacturer Geely, with whom the Swabians are already working on the Smart #1 electric car, in order to save costs in both cases. The e-car versions of MMA should - at least in part - rely on inexpensive LFP batteries, which can withstand more charging cycles than conventional lithium-ion batteries, but are more sensitive to winter temperatures. From 2025, all Mercedes luxury-class vehicles will be based on the MB.EA electric car platform without an LFP battery, so that from this point onwards, for example, a new edition of the E-Class will only be fully electric. The counterpart with a combustion engine will continue to be built after 2025 based on the MRA rear-wheel drive architecture and will probably receive several facelifts. In the summer of 2021, I was able to put the current W213 series to an everyday test as a diesel plug-in hybrid .

Collection for the Mercedes Vision EQXX with a range of over 1,000 km:

  • Mercedes undertook a test drive from Sindelfingen to Cassis with the Vision EQXX concept vehicle without recharging. The electric car can travel more than 1,000 kilometers with one battery charge.
  • The e-car relies on a lithium-ion battery with 100 kWh, which is also installed in the EQS 450+ today in this capacity dimension, but which only has a range of between around 400 kilometers in winter and 630 kilometers.
  • With the EQXX, Mercedes focuses on efficiency and achieves an average consumption of just 8.7 kWh, while the EQS consumes between 16 kWh and 28 kWh, depending on the outside temperature, wheel-tire combination and driving speed.
  • Mercedes does not use a heat pump in the EQS 450+, so that heating up the vehicle in winter can cost a lot of range, while a heat pump and heat exchanger are installed in the Vision EQXX to use less energy for heating.
  • In addition, there are a number of aerodynamic components in the Vision EQXX, so that the air resistance is only 0.17.
  • The Vision EQXX concept vehicle will not be available as a series vehicle. Only individual technologies should later be used in new Mercedes electric cars.
  • In order to reduce the power consumption of the infotainment system, AI technology is used so that the voice control only reacts above a certain threshold.
  • For this purpose, a chipset from Brainchip is installed, which provides 80 NPUs. Nvidia also continues to supply SoCs for the MBUX infotainment system and is working with Mercedes on further development.

The EQXX is only the beginning. Efficiency is the "new currency".

I was very critical of Mercedes during the transformation because they did almost everything wrong. They have given every classic competence out of the house and out of control. But then they came up with the idea to focus on software and efficiency. Maybe the maths will work out and they can hold their own against Tesla and the aggressive Chinese.

But elevating efficiency to the corporate throne will only work with the right technology ; ) I think to myself, and once they have got used to the technology... and chips are the new raw material...

In addition to this, I still assume that the Akida "Hey Mercedes" or MBUX will make the controls smarter in every vehicle and not only in the top models.

"Mercedes is said to be planning a compact electric car with a range of 850 kilometres
19.04.2022

Mercedes-EQXX.jpg

In April, as announced, Mercedes-Benz managed over 1000 kilometres on one charge in real road traffic with the electric car technology carrier EQXX (article image). With the technology developed for the mid-size sedan, series-production models are to be realised in a few years that will enable previously unattained long distances on one battery charge.

With the luxury sedan EQS, Mercedes has had the electric car with the currently longest range in its programme since last year. However, the 780 kilometres according to the WLTP standard cost over 100,000 euros. The EQS is the first model series to use the EVA2 electric car platform. Starting this year, the EQE sedan in the E-Class segment and SUV versions of the EQS and EQE will follow, but none of the models is expected to set new range records.

Mercedes is currently building its compact electric cars on architectures developed for internal combustion engines. By the middle of the decade, the first models will be launched on the new MMA platform for compact and mid-sized models. The architecture is specially designed for purely electric cars, but can also accommodate a small combustion engine if required. According to the Handelsblatt, the CLA Coupé could roll off the production line on the MMA as early as 2024, using much of the technology tested in the EQXX - and offering a correspondingly long range.

As a fully electric car, the 2024 CLA Coupé could cover a distance of between 650 and 850 kilometres without recharging, depending on the model. This is what the Handelsblatt has learned from an unnamed insider. The decisive factor for this flexibility, which is still unrivalled in the segment and overall, is said to be "enormously low consumption values" of around ten kilowatt hours. Mercedes recently proved that this is possible with the EQXX: The vehicle came to a very low consumption of 8.7 kWh per 100 kilometres.

However, around 800 kilometres is not supposed to be a new standard at Mercedes. On the one hand, only models like the CLA, which are particularly wind-friendly due to their flat design, are supposed to achieve this. Heavy SUVs that stand in the wind, such as the GLB, will consume significantly more energy. "Of course, aerodynamic drag is the most important factor in real-world consumption," says Markus Schäfer, head of development. He did not want to comment on concrete ranges with reference to the competition.

Efficiency the "new currency"
As with the brand's current electric cars, customers will be able to choose between several battery sizes for the MMA series. However, the decisive factor for the premium carmaker is efficiency - this is the "new currency" of the industry and must be considered in every detail of new vehicle platforms, Schäfer stressed. "What I can take in or out are cells to adjust the range. But the efficiency has to be purely developed."

The trick, he said, is to cover long distances with small energy storage units. The focus on efficiency is advantageous for both customers and vehicle manufacturers; Schäfer spoke of a "win-win situation". Customers would have lower energy costs, and the battery could also be smaller, making the e-car cheaper. But smaller batteries would also benefit Mercedes. "Every kilowatt hour we don't install helps the company to continue to be economically successful."

According to the developers, the battery pack of the EQXX with an energy density of just under 400 Wh/l stores close to 100 kWh of energy with 50 per cent less volume and 30 per cent less weight than the battery pack of the EQS, which has been the leader in this respect so far. The cell chemistry used in the record drive with the EQXX is to be used in production vehicles from 2024. Compared to previous battery systems, the Swabians used "a lot of silicon at the anode", Schäfer explained.

Furthermore, according to the report, Mercedes wants to use its self-developed electric powertrain in the future. This "eATS" has an efficiency of 95 per cent, whereas conventional e-drives only achieve 80 to 85 per cent. With the help of "bionic structures" and larger structural castings, the company wants to save weight and money. Mercedes is also working on drastically reducing the power consumption of the vehicle electrical systems. In future, every watt will count, Schäfer emphasised. Therefore, each component that requires energy should be able to be switched off individually when it is not needed."

I just had a quick look at the new EQS. The Akida also takes control of parts of the MBUX and display controls. Do I understand this correctly?

"There is much to discover in the digital interior of the new EQS SUV: For example, the optional MBUX Hyperscreen, whose displays self-learn to adapt to your habits, and the large head-up display with augmented reality."
