Driven by rapid technological advancements, the retail landscape is undergoing a dramatic shift. Among the several innovations driving this transformation is smart, cashierless shopping, which is capable of revolutionizing the consumer experience. With digital technology becoming increasingly embedded within physical retail environments, customers are able to enjoy a smooth, hassle-free shopping experience like never before, with the ability enter a store, choose items, and leave without having to wait for checkout. This is enabled through technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), machine vision, and automation, which can fundamentally transform store operations in addition to increasing convenience.

Tracing back to self-checkout machines and contactless payment methods which were among the beginnings towards reducing the dependence on traditional cashier-based interactions, the COVID-19 furthered cashierless shopping as consumers and retailers preferred touchless shopping experiences that minimized physical contact. The surge in this trend has led to cashierless shopping not only for convenience but also to ensure safety in an increasingly connected world.

Key technologies powering cashierless retail

Cashierless retail is driven by several cutting-edge technologies, each playing a crucial role in delivering a seamless shopping experience. One such technology is Edge AI, which processes data close to its source, such as in-store sensors or cameras, enabling real-time decision-making. In retail environments, Edge AI tracks Point of Sale (POS) and online shopping transactions, monitors inventory levels, and detects discrepancies, reducing stockouts and increasing revenue. Beyond operational efficiency, Edge AI also enhances security by detecting and preventing theft, further boosting profitability. In practice, this technology is integrated into smart carts and cameras to optimize customer interactions by minimizing latency, ensuring smooth and responsive operations throughout the shopping process.

Another transformative tool is Advanced Computer Vision, which aids machines in processing visual data such as images and videos, similar to the human visual pathway and nervous system. Through algorithms and models that gather insights from visual data to analyze customer patterns and preferences, it enables personalization to individual preferences and needs such as tailored recommendations basis past browsing and purchase history. This increases the conversion rates and enables customer loyalty.

Adoption of Predictive Maintenance systems bring several benefits to cashierless systems. Among these, is the monitoring of store equipment, smart carts, and other key equipment, which helps reduce unplanned downtime and optimize maintenance schedules. This enables a smooth, uninterrupted shopping experience for consumers. For the retailer, it reduces maintenance costs on emergency repairs and equipment failure, significantly increases its lifespan.

Finally, Voice User Interfaces (VUIs) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) can further the adoption of cashierless shopping. VUIs enable customers to use voice commands to search for products, add them to their cart and check out with the help of virtual voice assistants on their smartphone, or smart home products. With NLP-powered chatbots, customer queries can be resolved with prompt, human-like responses to straightforward inquiries, enabling the quick resolution of any issues. They can also provide information on product stock, they can simplify the shopping experience for the customer, saving time and energy, and enhance customer engagement.

The benefits of smart, cashierless shopping

The impact of smart, cashierless shopping goes beyond just technology—it profoundly impratcs the overall shopping experience by eliminating long queues and reducing the time spent at checkout, streamlining the process and allowing customers to enter and exit stores efficiency are greatly valued, this is particularly appealing.

By providing improved data quality for retailers, AI-powered cashierless systems leave retailers with reliable data on customer behavior, preferences, and purchasing patterns that can be used to refine their strategies, optimize inventory management, and offer personalized recommendations to shoppers. This gives them a competitive edge, as they can tailor their offerings to better meet the needs of their customers.

With regards to operations, cashierless shopping further efficiency and productivity through the automation of the checkout process. This helps retailers allow their staff to focus on other tasks, such as providing customer service or managing inventory. This not only improves store operations but also enhances employee satisfaction, as workers are no longer burdened with repetitive tasks.

Finally, the adoption of cashierless technology offers significant cost savings by automating manual processes like checkout. This helps retailers reduce labor costs and minimize the risk of human error which leads to higher profit margins and more efficient store operations in the long-term, making it a viable option for businesses looking to stay ahead of the competition.

The future of cashierless retail

Looking ahead, the integration of AI, the Internet of Things (IoT), and edge computing will continue to transform retail on a larger scale. As cashierless systems become more advanced and accessible, we can expect to see them adopted by a broader range of retailers, from small convenience stores to large supermarket chains. Retailers that embrace these technologies early will be well-positioned to thrive in an increasingly competitive market. By investing in smart, cashierless systems, retailers can enhance customer loyalty, improve operational efficiency, and ultimately, redefine the shopping experience for the future.

Was at Woolworths today and noticed for the first time, visual technology now on self serve checkouts. The checkouts camera detects and recognises the item and hoped that this may be due to some sort of machine learning. Am I thinking too deeply here (not well known for it). Hope your all well. Waiting with baited breath.

Nice, is that the South Korean connection ? 3 models, that sounds very much like AKIDA -E, AKIDA-S, and AKIDA-P

"On-Device without the internet" (sounds like a quote from my mate himself...Peter}

Gauss is multimodal............which we have been since 2020 (from memory)

Able to perform all 5 modals of human sensory.....that being, Vision, Hearing, Feeling, Tasting and Smelling.

Here's a fair question for all shareholders to ponder over, why is our Top-20 now full of Institutions, apart from ex staff and a few
public true believers ?

Because the element of expectation is nearing.

Final question, why hasn't Sean delivered his Investor Update after the release of the 3rd quarter with Tony pumping him with
questions.....I haven't actually asked Tony yet, but consistency is paramount.....Sean, what's the hold up ?

Cheers and goodnight from the Far North of Kiwiland.......Tech🤓

A while ago, I also mentioned a system here during a business trip to Japan. When I visited a bakery, the checkout system recognized each pastry and assigned the price accordingly. The name of the system was funny too… something with “Brain.” I’ll need to check my history to find it.

Congratulations and Well done to Sean!!

Managed to go through the whole 2024 without achieving anything

Apart from getting his well deserved shares this week.

Great to see management followed through with their commitment to communicate better to their shareholders.

3 years lead has well and truly gone.
That’s not correct. He might (still) not have managed to turn some here and in the crapper into millionaires. But when it comes to technological achievements, networking, and solidifying the company within the industry to shape it for a forward-looking and innovative future, he has done a great job. It’s all just a matter of perspective. But in one thing we can agree.. congratulations Sean!

Simply Wall Strxxt shows insiders hold circa 16.8% of SOI. Yahoo Finance shows circa 15.5% for insiders.
Shows lot of confidence from those 'in the know'.
We had the interview of Sean early November. I doubt we will get the Quarterly Sean/Tony update unless there are positive commercial devopments in the next couple of weeks.

If you are talking about quality assurance, as in ISO 9001 and the likes, ISO certification is about the process only and can be achieved in a few months. I know first hand after developing several of them by myself (for telecommunication companies) and from being an accredited internal and external auditor for more than a decade.
I agree with that. But the 9001 is just a bonus and nice to have, so that it goes faster with other ISOs (as option in e.g. Chp. 8), as this proof has already been provided.
Which ISOs are relevant at all? from the 27000 series?
