Hmmm ... it never Rains*, but it's poor.

The original Rain AI analog random nanowire tech, which was also backed by Sam Altman to the tune of $50M of OpenAi's money (and a little of his own) was a complete fizzer, and they are now pursuing a totally different digital approach.

Their random nanowire NN, which so beguiled Altman and the Saudis, confused the brain's complexity with chaos.

View attachment 63711

[0035] As indicated in the cross-sectional view of FIG. 3 B, not all nanowires 310 have electrodes located at the same cross-sectional cut. Although electrodes 350 are arranged in a rectangular array, memristive device 300 is not a crossbar array. Instead, nanowires 310 are dispersed on substrate 302 . In some embodiments, nanowires 310 are randomly or pseudo-randomly distributed across substrate 302 . In some embodiments, nanowires 310 have a distribution that is replicated multiple times across substrate. However, the arrangement of nanowires 310 in a particular replication may not be ordered. In other embodiments, the distribution of nanowires 310 may not be random or pseudo-random, but is not an ordered array. For example, two nanowires 310 may cross in multiple locations.

Rain have now moved on to what they call digital-in-memory, but this patent application is for analog-in-memory with DAC/ADC.

[0036] FIG. 3 depicts an embodiment of a cell in one embodiment of an SRAM CIM module usable for CIM module 230 . Also shown is DAC 202 of compute engine 200 . For clarity, only one SRAM cell 310 is shown. However, multiple SRAM cells 310 may be present. For example, multiple SRAM cells 310 may be arranged in a rectangular array. An SRAM cell 310 may store a weight or a part of the weight. The CIM module shown includes lines 302 , 304 , and 318 , transistors 306 , 308 , 312 , 314 , and 316 , capacitors 320 (Cs) and 322 (CL ). In the embodiment shown in FIG. 3 , DAC 202 converts a digital input voltage to differential voltages, V1 and V2 , with zero reference. These voltages are coupled to each cell within the row. DAC 202 is thus used to temporal code differentially. Lines 302 and 304 carry voltages V1 and V2 , respectively, from DAC 202 . Line 318 is coupled with address decoder 270 (not shown in FIG. 3 ) and used to select cell 310 (and, in the embodiment shown, the entire row including cell 310 ), via transistors 306 and 308.

So what does Rain have up its sleeve? (wet elbow, cold shoulder, goosebumps, ...)

The Boston Dynamics AI Institute is set to bring a develop team to Zurich at the start of 2024. In so doing, the organization, which is based in Cambridge in the US State of Massachusetts and focuses on leveraging the benefits of Artificial Intelligence, intends to support further growth and attract the best talent in Europe, as the Institute writes in a press release.

“The Zurich team will expand the Institute’s focus in core areas such as AI, hardware design, machine learning, dexterous mobile manipulation, and robot ethics, and will help us connect to talent, universities, and research organizations in the vibrant European ecosystem”, the press release states. According to information from the Institute, its culture is geared towards bringing together the best features of academic research labs and corporate development labs.

The Boston Dynamics AI Institute was founded in August 2022 by Marc Raibert, who previously founded Boston Dynamics, a robotics company based in Waltham, in 2013. It primarily focuses on researching and developing autonomous mobile robots, initially for the US military. In 2020, Boston Dynamics was taken over by the Hyundai Motor Company.

To begin with, Hyundai and Boston Dynamics invested more than 400 million US dollars to launch the Boston Dynamics AI Institute, further details of which can be found in a press release. In its first year of operation, the Institute has expanded its research, technical and operational teams to over 150 employees and brought on board ten guest professors, who work across 100,000 square meters of lab and office space in the heart of Cambridge

Again, no NN or AI.

One concern about Zurich is that it is home to a lot of analog NN Unis/startups.

I was just wondering if there has been any comments on the directors purchasing shares recently. I probably missed it but was hoping someone could put forward opinions of why all of a sudden 5 directors decided to purchase.
Was it to show confidence in the company or ….?

SoftBank Plans to Commit $9 Billion to AI Projects

BY PYMNTS | MAY 26, 2024

SoftBank-1.jpg

Japan’s SoftBank is reportedly planning to invest nearly $9 billion in artificial intelligence (AI).
The tech company’s outlay for investments and commitments has more than doubled to $8.9 billion in the 12 months since its CEO said the company was ready to go on the “counteroffensive,” the Financial Times (FT) reported Sunday (May 26).
“We will, in principle, be keeping the same kind of trend in terms of the pace of investment activities,” SoftBank’s chief financial officer Yoshimitsu Goto told FT. “From now on, we want to step up investments in AI companies.
“The reason we’ve been keeping our balance sheet at a very safe level is because we would like to be prepared,” he added, “and we would like to be flexible if there is anything that we would like to move on.”

Last year, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, projected that artificial general intelligence (AGI) — a computer system that can match or exceed human thought and reasoning — will become 10 times more powerful than all of humanity by the end of this decade.
“Take advantage of it or be left behind,” Son said.
The report said SoftBank faces some intense competition in the AI space, as tech giants like Microsoft, Amazon and Google have invested billions in partnerships with startups building AI models. In addition, top venture capital companies are hoping to do business with firms building AI products and applications.
In fact, last week saw reports that Microsoft and Amazon have already allocated $40-plus billion combined for AI-related and data center projects around the world this year.
For Microsoft, that means plans to invest more than $16 billion in various countries, including France, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, Spain and Indonesia, The Wall Street Journal reported. At the same time, Amazon has set aside investments of $15 billion in Japan, $9 billion in Singapore, $5 billion in Mexico and $1.3 billion in France.
The move to invest heavily in AI infrastructure overseas is fueled by the desire to tap into the growing worldwide demand for AI technologies, as well as a need to have data centers built in regions where the shift to cloud computing is taking place, making sure processing times are faster, while data remains secure and private.
