Hi @TechGirl I'm sometimes a bit slow. Do you and others think this is our chip running the Bosch Sensortech?

Hi DHM,

Don't think it would be our chip they are using as the chip they show is very small & not sure if they are using our IP, but I think they are crazy if they are not.

Fingers crossed :)

Hi Dhm,

Bosch and Mercedes Benz have a well known partnership so it is suspected Bosch would be aware of Brainchip.

The gas sensor is stated to contain AI so I’m hopeful it contains Akida!

They would be a great partner and I’m sure we could help boost their bottom line!

Hi SG,

Yes agreed & I think Bosch & NASA have a very close relationship as well

Any one else immediately upon reading your post remember Anil Mankar’s 2021 Ai Field Day presentation where he mentioned that a couple of nodes of AKIDA IP could do “pressure, temperature, low cost things” on a very small device and give all the functionality of AKIDA where latency was not a primary issue. Sounds perfect for this Bosch device.

If we can push back to $1 by the end of the week, we should be in a pretty good position to start given the new budget announcement.

For those interested in a comparison of Syntiant and BrainChip I found this Linley Group Report by Mike Demler from October 2019.

Quote of the day: "BrainChip has developed a unique product that’s more versatile than its low-power competitors".

There was such a big song and dance made about the lackluster ironing efforts made by the Brainchip team last time out. We felt it was appropriate to acknowledge the top job done this time out 🔥🔥👌 😂

SensiML adds AI capabilities to Arduino Nicla Sense ME featuring Bosch Sensortec sensors

  • Gives Bosch Sensortec sensor customers a complete edge AI solution
  • Tiny form factor board enables AI right at the sensing point
  • Arduino development board supported by multiple development tools

Portland, Oreg., – March 24, 2022
SensiML™ Corporation, a leading developer of AI tools for building intelligent Internet of Things (IoT) endpoints, today announced that it supports AI/ML development for the Arduino Nicla Sense MEtiny form factor board, which features Bosch Sensortec sensors. This support allows developers to use the SensiML Analytics Toolkit to add local intelligence quickly and easily to IoT endpoint applications using any of a number of Bosch sensors via the latest board from the Arduino pro series line-up.
The Arduino Nicla Sense ME board is physically small and comes with a 64 MHz 32-bit Arm® Cortex-M4 processor along with motion, environmental, pressure, and magnetic sensors from Bosch. Additional sensors can be easily added using the built-in SPI or I2C interfaces. The ultra-low power consumption and tiny size (less than one square inch) of the Nicla Sense ME board enables IoT developers to install complete, intelligent endpoints right at the sensing point for a variety of applications including smart home and building, consumer and athletic wearables, and industrial automation.

SensiML’s complete AI/ML development environment complements the board, making it easy for Bosch Sensortec sensor users to create low power yet highly intelligent endpoints without needing large teams of data scientists or previous AI expertise. Together, the SensiML Analytics Toolkit, Arduino Nicla Sense ME board, and the Bosch Sensortec sensors create a complete end-to-end smart IoT endpoint solution.
“Smart, tiny, ultra-low power and autonomous IoT endpoints are the wave of the future,” said Stefan Finkbeiner, CEO at Bosch Sensortec. “That’s why we worked with Arduino to develop the Nicla Sense ME board and with SensiML to support the board and our Sensortec sensors with sophisticated AI/AutoML development tools. The ultra-low power and intelligent sensors from Bosch Sensortec, together with the vigorous Arduino ecosystem and the powerful AutoML toolkit are orchestrated to shorten the time to market for the IoT developers to put together successful IoT endpoint solutions.

Well we will all have great actions against Peter van der Made and Sean Hehir if you are right or they could be telling the truth in which event the Renesas MCU incorporating AKIDA technology IP will be in the market this year.

Those who do not believe that they can rely on the CEO and Founder of a company should invest elsewhere.

Just following on from this I thought it might be worth putting some of Sean’s comments down in writing with respect to Renesas from the Q1 Virtual Summit on 9th March (in the video here, thanks to @TechGirl), because I seem to digest things in writing better than listening. I actually missed the specific question about Syntiant the first time I watched this.

From the “Market Traction” slide at the 17min 30sec mark Sean stated…

“The ones I can talk about are some licensees on the right, which we have announced. And there’s some very good examples of some licensee deals that we have. So Renesas is a Tier 1 semiconductor manufacturer specialising in microcontrollers. They’ve got a single use license. And then they’re developing a set of products and as they start shipping those products we will collect royalties on them. So they paid us a license fee and we’ll collect royalties.”

Then in the Q&A session:

Q. At 20min 48sec. What is your competitive advantage versus Syntiant and some of the other low power AI chips?

A. Yeah…you know when you look at ours versus…you know I don’t like to talk necessarily about a direct competitor like that, but I would simply say the following – we’re a lot more versatile than those. A lot of those kinds of companies like the one that you mentioned and a few others are very singular in their use cases. When I talked earlier about the multiple modalities – that is what separates us from companies like that. That we can do other senses. Not just one use case. Many of the low power on-edge chips are very specialised for one or two use cases. Ours is much broader...that’s one. Secondly the fact that we have an IP option and not just a chip option for customers that want to take IP and build custom chips because that is really what the market is going to…across all industries, not just artificial intelligence. The size of one chip fitting all is kind of…those days are gone. And that’s why we believe so strongly in the IP model.

Q. At 22min 08sec. When do you expect Renesas to have products with IP on the market?

A. It’s really their product and their timeline. We’re actively working with them right now and I really couldn’t comment on the specifics with when they will have their products out. I would simply say they’re on track…working very hard and we expect to see it on the timeline as it’s expected. If you look what it takes for somebody to develop a custom chip, it does take time for sure because it’s a lot of work to do it and it’s very….I would simply say all the engagements that we’re working on and the customers that we’ve sold are on time with the traditional industry track.

So in summary:
  • Renesas are “developing a set of products” using Akida
  • Akida is more versatile than competitors such as Syntiant’s NDP
  • Akida can do multiple modalities. [ It’s worth noting that Renesas have recently stated that they’re only using Syntiant for voice based emedded AI – refer to Slide 11 here and also from the 11m 40s mark of the video presentation here ]
  • Brainchip offers the chip and an IP option, whereas Syntiant is a chip option only
  • Renesas are on track to release their products with Akida IP according to their traditional industry timeline
