My understanding is that you automatically have THE RIGHT to participate UNLESS you sell those rights.

You can hold onto the RIGHT and still NOT exercise (pay them), and they just lapse.. So it's in your best interest to either take up the offer or get a few cents for the rights..

Well, have made the most of the rights issue... bought a good chunk of them and converted.... will likely sell off the heads and buy more oppies when listed... nice movement and volume on friday
