DoD Prioritizes AI, Space Tech, Sensing/Cyber in S&T Funding Plans

The Pentagon is requesting $17.2 billion to fund science and technology (S&T) projects in fiscal year (FY) 2025, with most of that money designated for artificial intelligence (AI), space technology projects, and integrated sensing and cyber efforts, according to the Defense Department’s (DoD) technology chief.
“If you see where the bulk of our funding is going … the biggest bar chart is trusted AI and autonomy. So that’s not going to be surprising. The second area we [put] a lot of money in is in the space technology arena. The third piece is the integrators’ sensing and cyber,” said Heidi Shyu, undersecretary of defense for research and engineering, during an April 30 online seminar hosted by the National Defense Industrial Association.
DoD plans to fund 14 critical technology areas in FY2025, including trusted AI and autonomy, space, integrated sensing and cyber, integrated network systems of systems, renewable energy generation and storage, and microelectronics. The department also plans to fund human-machine interface, advanced materials, directed energy, advanced computing and software, hypersonics, biotech, quantum, and 5G/FutureG.
Of that $17.2 billion request, 98 percent will fund the 14 critical tech areas, with about two thirds of the total directed to AI, space tech, and integrated sensing and cyber.
“Those three categories of areas we’re funding composed about 65 [percent] of our S&T budget,” Shyu said.
Specifically, the budget directs $4.9 billion for trusted AI and autonomy, $4.3 billion for space, and $1.9 billion for integrated sensing and cyber.
Additional tech area funding includes $1.6 billion for integrated network system of system, $1.5 billion for renewable energy generation and storage, $515 million for microelectronics, $458 million for human-machine interface, $414 for advanced materials, $355 million for directed energy, $333 million for advanced computing and software, $242 million for hypersonics, $224 million for biotech, $76 million for quantum, and $38 million for 5G/FutureG.
Notably, the department’s total S&T funding request for FY 2025 is 3.4 percent lower than the FY 2024 request. Last year, the department requested $17.8 billion.
“That is primarily driven by the fact that a lot more of the requests in terms of priorities went into the 6.4 bin as opposed to 6.1, 6.2, and 6.3,” Shyu said.
In other words, this decrease shows the department’s shift in priorities from basic and applied research to expediting the technology transition process into operational use, as the U.S. aims to field new capabilities at scale.
Shyu explained in her presentation that funding for budget activities 6.1 basic research, 6.2 applied research, and 6.3 advanced technology development only account for about two percent of the Pentagon’s S&T overall budget request. The majority would be for advanced tech development – about $9 billion – while $5.8 billion will go to applied research efforts and $2.5 billion to basic research.

HG,

He has resigned from his position. Now from the pod cast it was for personal reasons.

That is very broad personally does not want to work there ? or Health family life ? Who knows it's his business.

Now yes Nandan thanked the team and left very professionally.

Rob in march had a way remember he closed is LinkedIn account and name was removed then the company came to say it was a glitch and he is happy. Well then the next day all is back.

Now a month later he quit this time and deletes account.

But there his name pops up with Wavious on April 29th. But no account.

This action is not one of hate but possibly exhaustion and strain. It's possible he was burnt out. It's possible he has some personality clashes with the new team we don't know.

I Know Rob was a huge fan of BRN and Akida and him quiting may just be from stress and exhaustion.

The deleting the LinkedIn access I thin sways to wanting a break more then chasing a new better role.

The company is not driven by 1 person any more. BRN has matured to a point where akida is akida. We have new patents out PVDM Is not on them but but others BRN is independent of people.

Rob was a likable positive person great personality that will be missed but there are others.

Has anyone considered that Rob was let go?

Is always a possibility in any business.

Sean is accountable for the business as a whole and needs to make decisions, in conjunction with other senior execs possibly as well, regarding performance.

Rob was accountable for his role in sales which we know haven't really been forthcoming other than the first couple off the bat a couple of years ago.

Likeable is one thing, results is another.

I've been in the sales environment in various roles and industries for close to thirty years and it can be a grind at times and results are all that ultimately matters.

We know the company is under mounting pressure from SH and no doubt internally to get the sales and self sustaining revenue kick started.

Not all companies come out and say oh yeah, we let this person go. Usually it's a diplomatic reason given.

It could also account for the deletion of LinkedIn etc as he would no doubt be hurting as would anyone let go.

Nandan may be of his own accord or there could be possible future internal restructures being discussed and decided it wasn't for him.

That happens as well.

Hi FMF/Chippers
With respect @Fullmoonfever your posts are of great value to this forum. 👏

Sean as CEO of our company of course will have to make serious decisions with regard to the continued operation and with the end goal of driving the success of the company.
With regards to this "RT no longer working at Brainchip" ............. Seans response to Tonys question of why RT has left in the most recent podcast
imo was inadequate.
I, like many, do not like what ive seen of Sean through his various interviews and podcasts, ( and of course not to mention last years AGM ) and after the RT "revelation" in the podcast, Sean could have expanded on RTs departure as with the reasons he gave as to why NN has left.
If Sean came to the decision that RTs performance in sales was not good enough ......... FFS just tell us he was let go for these performance deficiets.
If it was a personality/company direction clash with Sean or any other staff members then why not say ........ RT choose to resign/RT was let go through various reasons not aligned with the company.
If it was through any other reasons, such as RT having health/family reasons, then why not expand the answer to .........with respect of Robs decision to leave the company, we will leave that information to RT/family to inform the community if they so choose to, and we do sincerly wish him all the best in the future and thank him for his past contributions to the company.

IMO, "through unforseen circumstances" ......⌛....( end of answer) is not a diplomatic answer. Its a answer that is saying that you shareholders dont need to know, and just isnt a strength of a CEO im wanting in a company i see so much potential.

Just my two bobs worth on this issue ............and with regards to Seans closing statement in the podcast ............... "i look forward to talking with the shareholders at the upcoming AGM " ..................... god i hope he has much more to say this time round on AKIDO ........... whoops, i mean AKIDA

AKIDO BALLISTO ;)

It is all political correctness ... this is why there is no specific reason mentioned, but if the company does not say that they wish the person all the best and thank him for his work and achievements, he was fired. If that person then deleted his profile completely instead of changing it, he was not happy to have been fired.
Maybe Rob cleaned Sean's desk out of anger and ran out? Maybe they hugged each other, shook hands and waved friendly goodbye. Who knows? We will never know! Rob is gone, so is Nandan, and the company will find somebody else and hopefully grow from it.

Since some of us are invested in brainchip, we are part of the company and some here pointed out that they will miss him and wish him all the best. So your post is not accurate! 🤔

But Rob was not in sales, he was ecosystem partner manager. Even when sales position was empty he was not given extra responsibility of sales. I feel he was sidelined for a long time. Even he was not coming out as prominently as he should be.
Again I cannot understand he was Vp sales, then company moved him to vp ecosystem partner and then employ another vp marketing. I donot know how the three roles were designed. To me a role was created for Rob and donot think it will be refilled either.
