Market: fall in the prices of the main minerals exported by the DRC

The prices of the main raw materials exported by the Democratic Republic of Congo have generally fallen on the international market, indicates the Central Bank of Congo.

Copper fell 2.1% to $8,805.9 per ton.

The price of cobalt continued its downward trend during the four consecutive weeks of the current month of February.

It is established at 33,760.00 USD per ton, a decrease of 4.3%.

In monthly footfall, the two major commodities fell 6.0% and 30.5% respectively.

According to the Ministry of Mines, the Democratic Republic of Congo produced a total of 2,515,846.74 tonnes of copper and 115,371.31 tonnes of cobalt in 2022.

Since 2020, copper exports have increased by 14.4% to reach a level of more than 10 billion USD, or 68.3% of total exports.

This increase reflects the simultaneous effect of the increase in prices on international markets.

This drop in prices is bad business for the DRC.

China to increase control over global cobalt supply — report

China is poised to increase its control over the global cobalt supply, according to a report by Darton Commodities, a UK-based cobalt trader.
blank.gif

Over the next two years, China’s share of cobalt production is expected to reach half of global output, up from 44% at present, Darton said.

Chinese refining activity reached 140,000 tonnes in 2022, giving the country a 77% global share of refining capacity.

The price of the metal hit a 32-month low this month amid a surge in production.

Global mine production grew 42% between 2020 and 2022 as covid-19 related supply chain constraints eased, existing operations ramped up and several new mines were commissioned.

Glencore Plc was by far the world’s largest cobalt miner last year, mainly from its two operations in Congo.

Eurasian Resources Group and China’s CMOC Group Ltd., which also have large Congo operations, followed the Swiss company as the biggest producers.

Global supplies are expected to surge to around 210,000 tonnes this year, up 24% from 2022, while demand is forecast to rise 8% to 205,000 tonnes, according to the report.

Liberum analyst Tom Price told Reuters that prices are expected to average $54,840 a tonne this year and $50,320 in 2024, compared with $63,739 last year.

“A lot of things converged at the same time to push the market down: the relaxation of logistics issues, weak consumer electronic sales and a technology shift towards lower or no cobalt EV batteries,” Caspar Rawles, chief data officer at Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, told the Financial Times.

Cobalt prices could fall further if Tenke Fungurume, the world’s second-largest cobalt mine owned by CMOC, is allowed to resume exports from the DRC after a tax dispute led to an export ban last July.

The company has kept producing despite the ban, stockpiling 10,000 to 12,000 tonnes of the metal.

In 2006, batteries accounted for 26pc of lithium demand.

By 2026 it will be 90pc

As the main component of lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles and stationary battery systems, lithium is considered the backbone of most green energy technologies.

Until the next technological advances are achieved, the light metal will be the driving force behind the ‘battery era’ over the next decade.

According to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence the battery industry is set to extend its dominance of the lithium market to such a point that by 2026 it will account for 90% of demand.

View attachment 32122

In a matter of twenty years, the astronomical growth in electric vehicle adoption has seen the battery industry grow from a relatively small consumer to become the markets primary driver.

And the race to secure supplies is far from over yet.

UBS says China’s efforts to increase uptake could see it account for nearly a third of the world’s supply by the middle of the decade.

The bank expects Chinese-controlled mines, including projects in Africa, to raise output to 705,000t by 2025, from 194,000t in 2022.

The Government encouraged to do everything possible for economic growth of 8% in 2023

Despite the difficult economic context marked in particular by the continuation of the Russian-Ukrainian crisis and the aggression suffered by the Democratic Republic of Congo by its neighbor Rwanda, the President of the Republic, Félix Tshisekedi, encouraged the Government to spare no effort to achieve economic growth of 8% in 2023 as projected by the staff of the International Monetary Fund.

The President of the Republic, Félix Tshisekedi, made this known during the ninetieth meeting of the Council of Ministers, held on Friday March 10, 2022.

"Faced with the favorable outlook expected in 2023, the President of the Republic encouraged the Government to spare no effort to support economic recovery, strengthen the resilience of our economy, preserve the purchasing power of Congolese by upgrading our national currency against foreign currencies, particularly the US dollar.

This, in order to materialize the economic growth projected by the services of the International Monetary Fund at 8%, despite the context of aggression of the country by Rwanda, and the persistence of the repercussions of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, which continue to disrupt African and global supply chains and drive up food prices, said Congolese Government Spokesman Patrick Muyaya.

According to the Congolese President, the strategies proposed by the African Development Bank (AfDB), which moreover align with the actions of the Congolese Government, should help the country achieve this ambition.

In its report, the AfDB suggests the continuation of the accelerated implementation of structural reforms aimed at strengthening the industrialization of the private sector supported by the Government in key sectors, such as: agriculture and agro-industry, smart energy transitions in the face of climate degradation, the development of natural resource value chains, in particular those of minerals as means of accelerating the economic growth of the DRC.

During the press briefing on Tuesday March 14, 2023, in Kinshasa, the ad interim Minister of Planning, Christian Mbadu, indicated that the Congolese government has already mobilized more than 700 million US dollars, i.e. nearly 50% of the financing of the Grassroots development program for 145 territories in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

''To date, the government has already mobilized and secured USD 762 million, or almost 50%, of the funding for the Program and the implementing agencies have already received USD 511.0 million for the first component of the programme'' , said the acting Minister of the Plan.

According to him, this first component consists of the construction of 2,200 works including 1,210 schools, 788 health centers and 145 territorial administrative buildings.

In addition, the Minister of Planning revealed that the government has also disbursed 12 million USD for feasibility studies on the rehabilitation and maintenance of 38,000 km of agricultural desert roads and 440 works of art.

Initiated by the President of the Republic, Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, the Development Program of 145 territories wants to initiate the development of the Democratic Republic of Congo from the base.

It takes into account 4 sectors of life, namely: water and electricity, health, education and agricultural service roads.

NGOs have been effective in the Gertler case due to their hard work - let’s be grateful they are also working in the interests of the Congolese people by supporting AVZ in their efforts to mobilise the Manono Lithium & Tin Project.

As Dan Gertler says, "the sanctions had the expected effect".

Justice is coming for $AVZ.

Implement OE 13818 against ministers #SimonCong and #DRC guilty of corruption.

Lualaba: for extortion, detention of war ammunition and murder, 3 Chinese subjects sentenced to death in Kolwezi

Three Chinese subjects and a Congolese were sentenced to death in the province of Lualaba by the military court near the garrison auditor in the city of Kolwezi, in the case which opposed them to the public prosecutor.

This is the result of the verdict pronounced on Tuesday, March 14 by Captain Jean-Marie Ngaba after a hearing devoted to this case.

These include Wang, Tsu, Wang Wa and Zidane.

In addition, the military court sentenced these three Chinese subjects to the payment of US$20 million payable in Congolese francs as damage and interest for committing a murderous act.

For the Congolese Abdallah, prosecuted in the same trial, the military court decided to release him from all prosecution.

He was said to recall that these Grande-Chemin Bandits were apprehended, prosecuted and sentenced to death for killing a Chinese merchant before taking a large sum of USD $54,900 on December 30 of last year.

Priorities 2023: Financial agencies sign performance contracts

The financial agencies of the DRC sign performance contracts with the government.

Also, they agree to redouble their efforts to go beyond their assignments during the year 2023.

It was during a ceremony of presentation of the 2022 performance, chaired by the Prime Minister, Jean Michel Sama Lukonde, in the presence of some members of the government including the Minister of Finance, Nicolas Kazadi, and members of the Cabinet of the chief of the state.

"I would like to thank all the executives of the Ministry of Finance for the effort provided, especially at the level of financial agencies throughout 2022 in order to provide the government with the means of its policy.

This testifies to your commitment to strengthen the resilience of our country in the face of the multiple challenges which it is called to meet.

I can only invite you to maintain the course and thus allow, through your work, the improvement of the living conditions of our populations in a strong, prosperous and united state, "said the Prime Minister.

Sama Lukonde issued the wish to see the financial agencies as well as all the other services of the Ministry of Finance redoubled efforts in 2023 to exceed the historic record of 2022 in terms of mobilization of revenues.

Confident to the press at the end of this ceremony, the Director General of the Directorate General of Taxes (DGI), Barnabé Mwakadi, encouraged the Congolese population to correctly pay the tax in order to give the government the means of its policy .

“He asked us to make more efforts.

We reassure that we have a duty to do everything to keep the course, or even really exceed the assignments they have given us.

It is true that there is a little difficulty.

We ask the government to support us in order to grant us the means that can allow us to manage VAT well.

Today, VAT enriches the collectors, so we ask the government to rely with software that will allow us to manage this VAT well, "he said.

And to the DID DIRECTOR OF THE DGI to add: "We are very concerned about granting the Warriors to the government a lot of revenues so that he can do his policy.

The people must really pay their tax correctly.

It is we who give government the means to do its policy.

If a people cannot pay their taxes well, the government will do absolutely nothing, "said the CEO of the DGI.

At the end of this ceremony, the Prime Minister awarded some prices to the financial agencies that distinguished themselves in terms of performance in the mobilization of revenues, by going beyond assignments.
