Congo faces claim over looting of gold mine

Toby Fisher

22 October 2025

A Chinese-owned mining company says it will resort to international arbitration after US$70 million worth of gold was looted from its mine in the Democratic Republic of the Congo by the Rwanda-backed rebel group M23.

Honestly, I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

Cheers
F

Would be interesting to see who they bring legal action against.
I doubt M23 has a legal incorporated entity that could be served.
Do they lodge their tax return on time? :)

Tshisekedi looks like a potato.
Trump is writing a love letter to Putin, and
Kagame left his pencil on the bus.

I'd say a lot of the anti-DRC narrative appearing on twitter lately is originating in Rwanda, to prop up Kigame's messaging. I wouldn't place too much weight in it. Though given Trump's desire for a Nobel prize and his regular refrain about how many peace deals his administration had fostered, in this instance some US pressure to sign in time for a well-publicised event at the White House would be credible

That’s according to chief executive officer Kurt House, who said that the company has already bid for one asset, which didn’t result in a transaction. He declined to identify the asset.

Good on management for holding firm. We've waited to long to sell out for peanuts.
