Chip Startup Defies Global Rout With 15% Surge in Tokyo IPO

Chip design firm Socionext Inc. jumped 15% in its Tokyo debut after completing Japan’s largest initial public offering this year, defying recent investor pessimism about global semiconductor shares.

Shares of the Yokohama-based company, which had Panasonic Holdings Corp., Fujitsu Ltd. and the Development Bank of Japan Inc. as holders prior to the listing, ended the first session at 4,200 yen. They were sold at 3,650 yen each, the top of the marketed range in an IPO that was upsized to 66.8 billion yen ($456 million) due to high investor interest.

Yes, it does sound like us doesn't it DB? It remined me a bit of what Peter Van Der Made said at Stocks Down Under’s Semiconductor Conference on 30 November 2021. Not sure a doorbell could be construed to be hand-held but 🤞. Here's what Peter said.

"We also priced the chip for use in hand-held solar-powered equipment. So that at the [inaudible 00:14:01] at the dollar store for a chip, so we priced this chip at a very competitive level, somewhere between $15 and $25 in quantities. Other point is real-time learning. We do real-time learning, which is unique in the market."

I'm trying to find out more about Eufy's proprietary BionicMind™ but I'm drawing blanks. Oh well, at least I'm not drawing Blankevoorts any more.🤭
I had this nagging negative voice saying there is a problem and a bit of searching found what was troubling me about this company:

The maker of Chinese security camera Eufy which is widely sold at JB Hi Fi appear to have a major security problem but despite concerns the local distributor Directed Electronics Australia is not saying where the servers the cameras are located.

Several leading technology sites claim the servers are based in China.
Owners of Eufy cameras are now ditching the brand because of security concerns.

Our request to Directed Australia follows the exposure of a huge Eufy privacy breach that resulted in both live and recorded camera feeds being shown to complete strangers.

What’s been revealed is that right around the world including in Australia and New Zealand strangers have had complete access to an account, including control of pan-and-tilt cameras where fitted.

ChannelNews can reveal that the app that comes with the JB Hi Fi sold cameras is developed by Chinese app developers Oceanwing which is a division of Anker Innovations a 100% owned Chinese Company.

Anker Innovations is a Chinese electronics company based in Shenzhen, Guangdong.

Online owners of Eufy cameras have also complained that when an Internet feed to an Eufy camera is down they have been unable to activate the SD card capability built into some of their cameras.

Haha

Has happened to me as I think to most as well from what I've heard.

Although as I posted earlier....there is a digital connection so is a hybrid.

The analog does pattern ID and the digital....well....hmmm

Snippets from June 22 article.

Polyn’s first NASP chip contains 50,000 analog neurons.

The final product is a hybrid of a fixed analog network for pattern identification, and additional dynamic digital component in charge of interpreting patterns.

This component is also responsible for the addition of new components to the algorithm during updates and even to perform training at some level. Timofeev: “An average of 90% of the neural network is fixed and unchanged. Less the 10% is updated during operation. Our chip is hybrid: we transform 90% of the network to an analog circuit, and the rest remains digital. We can also adjust this ratio according to the specific needs.”

I don’t like them because in their White Paper they spent half a page rubbishing the use of digital neural fabric and praising analogue. Then they make light of the problems with manufacturing errors in analogue semiconductors.

It is one thing to overstate your products capabilities yet another to tell porkies about science.

Redefine production excellence with a unified data platform

With the MO360 Data Platform, the Stuttgart-based carmaker can create a virtual replica of its vehicle manufacturing process, combining insights from assembly, production planning, shop floor logistics, supply chain and quality management. The virtual simulation and optimization of processes before running them on the shop floor, helps to accelerate operational efficiency and unlock energy savings. For example, managers can optimize operational patterns to reduce CO2-emissions in production.
Mercedes-Benz is also exploring the integration of the MO360 Data Platform with data sources from other departments to enable a digital feedback loop that will spur continuous learning and innovation across the Group.
The recently opened Mercedes-Benz Digital Factory Campus Berlin is the home base for the MO360 Data Platform engineering teams and will become the MO360 training and qualification center for implementing digital approaches globally.

Increase supply chain resilience and efficiency

With the new centralized data platform, teams can instantly analyze and visualize production data, to faster optimize production processes and identify potential supply chain bottlenecks. This enables a dynamic allocation of operational resources within and across plants to prioritize the manufacturing of low-emission and Top-End Luxury vehicles.
The Mercedes-Benz Operations Logistics team will be able to solve supply chain bottlenecks much faster. They can compare the availability of components, including semiconductors, with production orders and position this data against production parameters including operational running plans. As a result, plant managers keep the production running and prioritize relevant vehicles even if supply chain challenges occur.

Move at full speed towards an all-electric future

The MO360 Data Platform will make it easier to maintain production of both electric and combustion-engine vehicles on a single production line as the market demand gradually shifts towards an all-electric future. To tackle shortages in components and prevent delivery delays, the MO360 Data Platform will enable teams to explore a variety of production scenarios depending on the availability of components like semiconductors, based on real-time data about the quality of parts and equipment. This is expected to result in productivity gains of 20 percent in passenger car production by 2025 and help to avoid unplanned downtimes and schedule maintenance work in a timely and CO2-friendly fashion.

Reduce ecological footprint from water and energy use to waste management

As part of the MO360 Data Platform, Mercedes-Benz has implemented an analytics tool to monitor and reduce its ecological footprint during vehicle production, a crucial milestone towards the company’s Ambition 2039 to become carbon-neutral by 2039. With the data analytics tool, teams can track and forecast carbon emissions, energy and water usage as well as waste management and roll out best practices across the production network. Mercedes-Benz plans to cover more than 70 percent of its energy needs through renewable sources by 2030 by expanding solar and wind power at its own sites and through Power Purchase Agreements and plans to cut its use of water by 35 percent through the reuse of water in production.

Democratize data to enhance workforce productivity and distributed teamwork

Mercedes-Benz production staff gets access to the MO360 Data Platform via a self-service portal available on any company device including tablets, smartphones and laptops. Its visualization with Microsoft Power BI provides a what-you-see-is-what-you-get experience, allowing employees to become data workers with the ability to model and correlate data. The Teams Walkie Talkie app provides workers with an instant push-to-talk (PTT) communication on their business phones – no extra device needed.
With the MO360 Data Platform, teams at Factory 56 have shortened their daily shop floor meeting by 30 percent. In addition, they identify priority tasks to optimize production workflows within two minutes, which took up to four hours prior to the introduction of the platform. From team leads and process engineers to shop and plant managers, employees are encouraged to contribute new use cases to drive process innovation with Microsoft Power Platform.
Working with a global community of internal and external developers, Mercedes-Benz’ production process software engineers are committed to open collaboration. They use Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) including GitHub to improve the quality of the software and the speed of delivery. They benefit from Azure Data Lake, Azure Databricks and Azure Purview to process and govern huge amounts of data and run AI and analytics using their preferred development frameworks. For software deployment and operations, they work with Azure DevOps

Interesting comments. I own a EUFY security system and it’s not cloud based or subscription required like other security systems.
My understanding is EUFY cameras are some of the most secure home cameras available. These devices store information locally and stream video via the Eufy app. The app itself is protected by near-seamless encryptions that make hacking virtually impossible. As such, Eufy cameras pose few privacy or security concerns

BrainChip: When will a big tech player take action?
Simon Ruic / 12.10.22 / 12:15

Shares in Australian start-up BrainChip (NYSE:BRAIN) are up 3.55% to AU$0.88 today after the company secured a new US patent for its super neuromorphic chip. Are the industry giants around Intel & Co. finally pricking their ears?
BrainChip Holding is an Australian technology company with solutions in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI & ML). The chip developer's flagship project is a so-called neuromorphic processor called Akida. It should come very close to how the brain works and therefore be very energy-efficient. The tech title is currently worth over US$ 900 million on the stock exchange.

The patent hunt continues

BrainChip's patent portfolio grows and grows. According to a stock market report on Wednesday, the manufacturer received another certificate of protection for the technology of its Akida processor from the US Patents & Trademarks Office.

According to BrainChip, the new patent entitled "An Improved Spiking Neural Network" increases the protection for its neuromorphic on-chip learning technology in particular. According to the report, memory management in BrainChip's flagship product is handled "innovatively", which would significantly reduce power consumption and costs when deploying edge applications to customers.

BrainChip now has 10 protection certificates in the USA and one in China. In addition, the company has now registered a total of 27 additional patents in the USA, Europe, Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea, India, Brazil, Russia, Mexico and Israel.

Is Selling Pressure Falling For The Stock?

Around the turn of the year, BrainChip caused a sensation in the industry for the first time by commercializing the world's first neuromorphic AI chips and possibly securing very promising patents.

Within three weeks, the processor developer's stock shot up by +200% to over AU$ 2.20. By March, however, most of the gains had evaporated. The already abysmal stock market environment for small tech stocks continued to deteriorate as a result of rising interest rates and fears of recession, and the paper subsequently fluctuated around the AU$ 1 mark with swings of up to 30%.

However, the pressure on Brain Chip stock from macroeconomic developments may now be easing. The Reserve Bank of Australia has already apparently slowed the pace of its tightening policy by raising interest rates by less than expected last Tuesday.

Significant partner network

In addition to the fact that BrainChip collects patents like other companies, the Australians have also maintained a positive flow of news with spectacular partnerships.

In the summer, the processor developer initially announced that it had been included in the industry giant ARM's AI Partner Program; A little later, the Akida makers officially launched their University AI Accelerator Program at five well-known US universities with AI institutes - including Carnegie Mellon University, which according to the magazine U.S. News & World Report has the best AI degree in the country, beating elite tech universities MIT and Stanford.

BrainChip had previously forged sales and research alliances in Europe and set further exclamation points: Heavyweights such as Mercedes and the US Air Force have announced a partnership with the Australians.

The buyout bet

However, anyone with a little knowledge of the industry knows that given the billions that tech giants spend on R&D every year, a real technological breakthrough for a small start-up is very unlikely.

In this respect, it makes me suspicious that apparently no big player has yet seriously considered taking over BrainChip. Risk-averse investors can still bet with a small portfolio share that a chip giant will give them a mega return with a buyout of the edge AI specialist.
