Copper exports from DRC to the US begin via Lobito Atlantic Railway

The first US shipment of copper from mines in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to be transported by the Lobito Atlantic Railway (LAR) has been loaded.

A cargo of copper cathodes is headed to Baltimore after arriving by train at the port of Lobito in Angola on August 19, global commodities trader Trafigura Group, which is part of a consortium with a concession for the line, said in a statement.

The shipment follows several previous shipments of copper to ports in Europe and the Far East since the Lobito Atlantic Railway took over the concession in January of this year.

LAR, a joint venture backed by Trafigura, Portuguese construction group Mota-Engil and railway operator Vecturis, was granted a 30-year concession in 2022 to operate the 1,300-kilometer rail network.

The six-day rail journey demonstrated “the time-efficient western route to market that is now available for minerals and metals produced in the Congolese Copperbelt,” Trafigura said.

The Lobito corridor is seen as a key export route from mines in Congo and Zambia for minerals critical to the energy transition, including copper and cobalt.

The US and EU, under the Group of Seven’s Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment, are supporting the project as part of efforts to counter China’s dominance in the Central African Copperbelt.

Looks like Manono Lithium (Cominiere/Zijin) didn’t get the memo to cease all activities on our 13359 tenement as they’re advertising for tenders now for construction - it’s a long article so I’ve just posted the first para.

And of those 9 countries how many will not take a bribe , really ? USA to the rescue I doubt that very much , they look after number 1 only, themselves , don't ever kid yourself if there is nothing in it for them it is ignored or they would be already talking to them about AVZ not rail links etc .

Well what is the solution that the USA are seeking? What is the end game for the the US? Who gets what?

You would think if Manono is being specifically discussed with regards to the Lobito Corridor , the US will want all issues resolved one way or the other . Either DRC /AVZ resolution or ICSID final verdict with an AVZ victory which could take a few years . How does Kibeya bull sh1t his way around that ?

Must be the first time I’ve heard anyone in a position of power mention Manono, AVZ, Australians, Cominiere and lithium in the one sentence apart from that fuckwit kibeya.

If the Yanks are showing interest then our government must be taking notice. Yanks would want a friendly in charge of Manono supplying the U.S instead of those corrupt chinese controling the market.

Mate, I think I need to disagree with you on two points.

1. If the Yanks are showing interest then our government must be taking notice.
Never underestimate our federal government's ability to ignore the plight Australian companies...except where there is a potential electoral benefit and no risk of upsetting China. While the Cwth govt occasionally makes noises about Chinese bad behavior, it's really just window dressing.

2. Yanks would want a friendly in charge of Manono supplying the U.S instead of those corrupt Chinese controling (sic) the market.
The west, particularly the yanks have had two years to take a position and make their views known to the DRC govt. It hasn't happened and is therefore unlikely to happen. While we think that the USA is Australia-friendly, when it comes to business the US takes a self-serving position every time.

Sorry to say that it seems unlikely we will see Roy Rogers riding to the rescue.

Cheers
F
