Blackstone are an ASX company based in Perth who have their main project in Vietnam but also have leases in Canada and have invested in up and coming nickel prospects in Canada and Australia.
They have an existing mine which was mined before the nickel price caused closure. They own 90% of the mine and it has an existing plant mainly for massive sulphide. They have a whole district with what they think will be up to 25 prospects. They already have a very large low grade disseminated sulphide prospect and are planning to build and 8mtpa plant separate to their existing small plant. There is a PFS for the upstream expected soon.
They are also planning a very big downstream(refining) project which has a PFS already out with a base case 2 billion npv. Spot Npv is a lot higher.
The refinery is designed to produce a precursor for the cathode of the ncm811 batteries. However the refinery can be adjusted to produce different variations of ncm precursor and also intermediate products. The versatility comes because the refinery is a modular setup and can be tailored to customer's requirements.
From my view management have moved very quickly in developing the ideas employing key staff and getting into pilot plant operation. Also the Vietnam Govt seem to be very supportive.
There is a Vietnamese company Vinfast that has been making electric scooters, electric bikes etc who are also planning to build electric cars. They are planning to list on the Nasdaq as part of the EV push. They have been mentioned by Blackstone as a potential partner, customer but no deal confirmed yet.
They also have a South Korean company EcoPro who is a very big battery company and they are a shareholder of Bsx. EcoPro have a board member on the BSX board. They were the company who encouraged BSX to look for nickel in the first place as BSX were concentrating on Cobalt and Gold. It is expected they will be an investor in at least one of the downstream refineries.
