Was just interesting to see what a Toyota investor arm Exec thought and I noticed Recogni. Part extract below.

✒️ How does your background as a rocket engineer help as a VC? When you're investing in deep tech, having a technical background is super helpful. Your natural approach is to ask: Does the technology work? What are its potential pitfalls? Does it violate any fundamental laws of the universe, like the second law of thermodynamics or perpetual motion machines? That’s the first qualifier of any of my investments. I'm a big Charlie Munger fan, who said that think about all the things that can go wrong, address them, and you have a much better chance of things going right.

✒️ What’s your investment thesis and biggest focus areas in 2024? You can’t centrally plan innovation. We believe that the dynamism of the startup ecosystem forges the future. Our mission is discovery, in terms of what's next for Toyota and the market. We invest out of two funds: our frontier fund, which focuses on deep tech, autonomous mobility and robotics; and our climate fund, dealing with things like carbon capture and storage, renewable energy. AI is one of our biggest focus areas across both funds, but the next wave will actually be more valuable than the current generative AI wave.

✒️ How so? I’m in the Yann LeCun-Judea Pearl school of thought, in that there are three rungs of AI — seeing, doing and imagining. We're just in the early innings. What's going to power the next rungs? New computing. So, we're looking at neuromorphic computing. There will be next-gen compute and algorithms that'll be able to do much more with much less energy than today. We have a company called Recogni that provides high throughput and low power for edge inference applications. We’re also thinking about how to use AI to discover new materials for direct air capture and drug discovery, for example, through Orbital Materials.

Research Vision and Interests​

The main goal of CPHS lab is to develop strategic and trustworthy cyber-physical-human systems which improve safety, reliability, trust and security in human-machine interaction. In this regard, the research team makes scientific and technological advancements in the areas of machine learning, human behavior prediction/modeling, game theory and multi-agent control. The work carried out in this lab is supported by diverse funding agencies such as National Science Foundation, The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (CDC-NIOSH) and Boeing.


Facilities​

Cyber-Physical-Human Systems Laboratory (in short, CPHS lab) is directed by Dr. Sid Nadendla and is housed in Room 101 (Total area: 626 sq. ft) in the Computer Science department at Missouri University of Science and Technology (in short, Missouri S&T). The lab has six high-performance Dell-Precision workstations which are equipped with a wide range of hardware and software capabilities, including MATLAB, Python, MATSIM, TensorFlow and PyTorch. One of these workstations also is equipped with Brainchip's Akida ADK1000 neuromorphic chipset. The lab also has 10 Waveshare JetBot AI kits and 10 additional Nvidia’s 2GB Jetson Nano developer kits, which are used to develop f-1/18th vehicles that can mimic both manual and self-driving cars, as well as road side units in our transportation testbed.

Well, at least MF will be happy about Recogni management, even if they don't know what's a neuromorphic computer anyway:

Introduction​

At Recogni, we develop an industry-leading chip for accelerating deep neural network inference for highly automated driving. This chip runs neural network inference extremely efficiently—you may have seen references to 1000 TOPS at 25 Watts in our previous write-ups. That’s not a pipedream—the chip exists and is customer-deployed. Input to the system are pairs of stereo camera images. Cameras see farther and are more cost effective to integrate in production vehicles than other sensor types such as LIDAR or RADAR. That’s why it’s natural to combine them with our cost-efficient inference chip for a high-performance, low-wattage perception solution.

The system would not be complete without a perception stack to actually run on it. This article presents an overview of how we build and deploy our stereo 3D Object Detection (3DOD) model and continue to improve it over time.

We concentrate on 3DOD because even though it is a very difficult real-world problem, it’s one where our great compute capacity and the ability to process high-resolution imagery very efficiently offer huge benefits. Additionally, it imposes challenges beyond the pure neural network execution, such as decoding of network outputs into 3D boxes in space or running Non Maximum Suppression.

We develop perception architectures for 3DOD and other applications both to deploy with customers and to gather knowledge not readily available - especially how to convert models for this new hardware.
